I have a 2019 MGM color SR5 with the chrome bulge and grill surround and I am considering blacking it out with rattle can bed liner spray or similar. Any thoughts, pics or has anyone done this. I would like them color matched but the overlays and replacement grills are expensive.

How about color matched paint, will it stick if I scuffed them up and used etching primer first?

Mr. Iowa, I rattlecanned a near perfect match of mgm on my tacoma with duplicolor. I did the process of roughing up chrome surround, and using etching primer and then a few coats of the duplicolor and a couple coats of clear. I will try to see if I can find a picture or two of it.

I found a couple pictures of the day i sold it which was 2+ years after painting. You can see flaws in the clear coat and chips in the paint. But I believe if you prep better than me and do a really good job with the clear and wet sanding between clear coats it will look good and stay looking good.

I PAINTED THE FRONT GRILL SURROUND AND THE EMBLEM ON THE TACOMA

I've also done this process, scuffing the "chrome", priming, painting, clear coating... it still chipped like hell and looked like shit in less than a year. I bought OEM color matched replacements and gave the old setup away.

I saved up and bought the parts I wanted. I have never seen rattle can paint look good months after, it just doesn’t hold up, especially on the front end where you take the most damage from dirt, sand, rocks, etc. Good luck if you try, you won’t be out much money if you don’t like it.
