Hey everyone, thinking of getting some new shoes for my truck. I have a 2017 Tundra 4x4. The tires on it just look small in relation to the body of the truck. I'm not looking to jack my truck up to the sky or put 44s on it, just wanting to go up a little bit. My barber said I should get a leveling kit on it and then go up a few sizes. I've got 285/55 on 20s. I'd like to put some 35x12.5s on. So when I checked out the tire websites, they had two types...35x12.5 R20LT 121R E and 125Q F. Can anyone explain what the last set of digits means? Thanks from Biloxi!

E and F are the load rating. F is for 1 ton + trucks that are hauling extremely heavy.

285/65/20 looks pretty good if you want to stick with 20s

Lots of threads on the topic, but you have several options. On a stock or mildly leveled vehicle, you can fit a much larger size tire as long as you pay attention to the new tire width and your wheel offset. Stock wheels are very conservative at +60mm, which keeps the wheel and tire tucked nicely in to the fender well. This has a lot of advantages, but can put a wider tire like a true 35x12.50 very close to the upper control arm. Many folks like the look fo a more aggressive wheel offset that pokes the wheel/tire a little outside the fender. a +12, 0, or even negative offset wheel will pull that tire edge further and further out of the wheel well and give and aggressive stance. But it can also cause clearance issues with taller/wider tires hitting the inner fender plastics, bumper, and even the body mount.

If you are keeping a stock wheel, @Hbjeff suggestion of 285/65r20 shouldn't give you many clearance issues (possibly the small mudflaps) while giving you a 35" tall tire. They are a little skinnier at about 11.25" wide but that should clear the upper control arm just fine. Lately, a 285/75r18 tire has become more popular among the 18" wheel crowd; the 285/65r20 is essentially the same size tire for a 20" wheel. I still run a stock size tire because I run through quickly and I tow a lot, but if I stepped up to a bigger size, I would consider that 35" tire.
