I m not sure there s a right or wrong answer to that question. Of course it matters what components are used, but IMO it s also the type of media files used, and the tune of the system amoung other things. They all play a part in the resulting sound quality.

It’s important to note that JRT/Tech12Volt doesn’t really keep his website up to date and that his packages are always evolving, so like others said, if you email him and tell him what kind of sound you are looking for he will put something together for you and give you a quote, and he usually does it within hours.

James (tech12volts) really is responsive, he knows what he's doing and his prices are very reasonable. OP, IMO you should get the best system you can afford:
    - Pick a speaker package depending on what your wallet can bear
    - Upgrade that HU at the same time

I've already dropped $2500 on mine, ugh.

I feel you. I remember when I got my Tundra last year I told myself I would keep it under $1k on the sound system. 3 separate purchases from @james@tech12volts and $3k later....here I am. But man does it sound good.

Sure. So I started with the Kenwood DMX1057R (same as the 1037S from what I can tell). It does add wattage to the stock speakers but it still sounds muddy and distorted. I then went with one of his “JBL Complete packages” which, funny enough, didn’t have any JBL pieces just because he had the Infinity 5 channel amps in stock and not the JBL’s even though they are identical products produced by the same manufacturer. He had the JL Audio W0 subs in stock and not the Infinity/JBL subs, but it seems like this may have been an upgrade even though I haven’t heard the other subs. Went with 2 10’s in a ported box along with the Hertz K170 in all 4 doors. At first I loved it and honestly would have been happy if I never changed anything else but I reached out to JRT explaining that I felt like I had great highs and lows but seemed to be lacking in the midrange area. It felt like there was a “gap” in the sound, and I am FAR from an audiophile so this is the best way I could describe it. Basically his response was that I am correct and that many people don’t even notice that but that the only way to achieve truly full and rich mids is to upgrade door speakers to much better ones. The K170 are great at the price point of $99/pair and basically all you can ask for at that price point but if you want to really notice the difference you should bump up a couple levels which led us to the $310/pair Hertz CK165L. I told him I felt like I only needed to do this for the fronts as rears are more for fill and he agreed, so he sent me the new ones and I was super impressed. What shocked me is that I noticed my subs sounding better, and I thought this couldn’t be right, so I emailed him to ask him why. What happens when you upgrade your door components to something that can actually handle midbass is that those speakers are now picking up some of the bass notes that the K170 couldn’t, so the subs were doing that, but it’s not a frequency that subs should be picking up, so it does ever so slightly distort the sound. The upgrade of the mids now allows the subs to do their job by focusing on the low end and cleans up the sound as a whole. Knowing what I know now I’ll never skimp on door speakers because it truly did improve the whole system. Now I can play any genre of music at literally any volume and it sounds crisp and perfect. Money WELL spent.

So you think those hertz speakers are pretty good then? Did you ever consider going with something more well known as JL audio or something for fronts?

Hertz is every bit as good as the more common brands. They’re just not pushed through the big box stores so the brand recognition isn’t equal.

    This.

JRT is careful not to say anything negative about any of the brands he carries, but without saying it, he seems to hint that the higher end Hertz components are better than the equivalent JL's. He uses the JL components when customers specifically ask for them. He is also big on Arc Audio for subs, another brand that few people know much about. He said the Arc X2 10's are the hardest hitting and cleanest he has ever heard for a 10" sub at that price point. I plan to upgrade to those down the road, but he said I will need more amp as well.

I've had Hertz for a year; and I think they're fantastic. I agree they're every bit as good.

I’m running Hertz K170’s in all four doors.
And Love The Range Of Them.
(leaving the dash tweets out of play)
A dual ported custom built Taylor’s box with 2 JL’s with a JBL 5055 amp & RF Maestro DSR
On the factory JBL head unit that sounds very clean with shiny / bright highs, crisp mids and strong useable bass.
You will love anything James and his crew package together for you. They “have done all the R&D work” with great sound results

Brand recognition, I ve found, depends where you hang out. There s several brands that are bad to the bone yet are not well known to the masses. Speaking of bad to the bone. Hertz MLK s are.
