I've been looking for some interior photos of how people have their bed set up with a cap/shell for ideas.

Can be all inclusive between Cap, Tonneau, Campers, etc.
Lets see what your bed setup looks like!

** If you can, let us know what brand/model your cover is.**

BakFlip HD tonneau cover with full BedRug. We love this setup because it's easy to clean, easy on my knees, makes the bed a lined trunk or a pickup bed.

This setup isnt the prettiest. The platform is for a full size 4” memory foam bed. Use it for road trips, camping and sleeping at marina. Platform is broken up into 3 hinged lids, storage underneath.BFB7B68B-EC18-4911-B980-3138E5AD2FE6.jpg

Homemade Decked system. Works great. I have custom compartments along the sides/wheel well that I can reach through the windoors on the sides of the cap.

A buddy with a crewmax rolls down both window in truck and lowers shell window for AC in the back. With the help of battery fan he says it stays comfortable all night in Texas heat. Definitely jealous.

Luckily I don't have to worry about that anymore. In utah I have to worry more about staying warm at night even in summer haha

Here's my build out. Goal was to get the bed (Queen size) as low as possible, for maximum head room, and still be able to get all our gear in the space below. Another goal, to be able to remove the entire setup in just a few minutes. That meant nothing could be bolted in. We wanted/needed lights and phone charging capability back there too, so a couple of USB ports and lots of LED strip lights were installed. They are powered by a small AGM battery from a UPS. It charges while the truck is running I and gets isolated via a relay when the truck is shut off.

Building out the side cabinet. Window shades, miscellaneous stuff, and a small AGM battery hide in there.
    IMG_20190307_082942478.jpg

Here's the bones installed in the bed. Everything just press fits in there.
    IMG_20220106_102205221_HDR.jpg

    IMG_20190307_161032079.jpg

Built a couple of shelves with strip lights for inside the cap.
    IMG_20190301_213430885.jpg

And the inside with the shelves and lights. USB power and light switches are in the black box.

    IMG_20190330_165704780.jpg

    IMG_20190503_190117878.jpg

After a couple of trips I ended up adding a LED strip to the awning, and a couple of reading lights to the front of the cap.
    IMG_20190503_190136286.jpg

    IMG_20190601_182913823.jpg

Here it is in action. Very simple yet very functional. The Mrs potty tent gets thrown on top of the bed, along with our camp chairs. Camp kitchen and all our other camping gear fits under the bed. Our cooler and clothing duffels live in the backseat of the cab.

EDIT: Oh! the cap is a basic SnugTop (don't know what the model is) I found after scouring CL for about a year. Came with the rack and the awning.

I have a decked and a Leer 100XR with windoors. I sleep diagonally across it very comfortably with a sleeping pad and down top quilt! Do wish I had an access cab with a longer bed. Oh well!

This is a nice set up and kind of what I'm looking to do.. camper shell with a sleeping arrangement that is suited for a crewmax bed. How tall are you if you dont mind me asking? I would have to sleep diagonal myself since I'm 6'.

I'm 6' as well, maybe a little over. I can stretch out fully and its not bad at all. I close the tailgate and rear glass and its quite cozy on a cool or rainy camp night

@junior @Blang805 I'm still waiting for someone with a cap that has the fold down window to develop a telescoping bed platform that would telescope into the truck. So to set it up, you'd roll down the crewmax rear window, hop in the truck bed and fold down the cap window, then telescope the bed into the truck and sleep with your feet in the truck and head toward the tailgate. Might be kinda tight but I see people on here sleeping under tonneau covers. Cant be any tighter than that. One of you two should give it a shot! :welder:

sounds like a great idea. I probably could have my fabricator friends help me build some swingers with a lock to raise the sleeping platform up above the bed rails and have a section near the tailgate fold towards the rear of the truck to get an extra foot or two BUT im trying to avoid having bugs and due from the mornings either eat me alive/soak my sleeping material since the cab and camper have a decent gap between them. Im usually camping out at the lake or up in the mountains so im trying to keep away from those 'elements'. I know people have done the bike tubes and other stuff just ive never seem something id fully commit to.

I know is sounds lame, but im trying to be all sealed up or have a sliding window cracked with a screen of some sort.

Makes sense and cant blame you for that. I know there are those people that have the slide outs as well that just come out onto the tailgate. Like this video below.
But it pretty much ruins the bed for any other purpose.

I wish you luck in your search and I hope you come up with a great solution for all of us!

pretty cool idea, being able to remove everything. are the 2x4s the only thing supporting the platform? or do you have other support under there? being able to semi-easily remove everything would be nice.

Yeah, the 2x4's across the bed are more than sturdy enough with out additional support.

I wanted to power lights, fridge, heated blanket, blender fans etc and not kill starter battery.
Best answer was a second battery and power it with solar when camping and dc-dc charger it while driving.
I watched a ton of “milk crate” battery pack build on ytube because I liked the portability idea.
I liked the lithium battery’s “lipofe?”discharge /charge profile and realized for my needs and less pain in the balls I could
Just buy a all in one unit. Power the truck, power the fridge at home if we lose power etc.
I went with the Ecoflow delta 2 that just came out. Spendy- yes but it serves multiple uses and I like that.

I then made a “box” for the plugs and switches. Ran a male “12v” plug into the fuse box I added to further separate power sources. I plug that into Eco battery pack when I want it to use cap power. Unplug it when I’m done and take it inside after trips.

BC97981D-4FFB-40AF-9ED5-97B574F689DB.jpg It plugs into the 12v out on the battery (under the 6 outlets) via the male 12v cord. Ringed ends connect to fuse panel.

there are other power stations like jackery and goal zero. I went with eco because it recharges crazy fast vs others. It went from 30% to 100% in 40 mins at home. Figured if I had to poach power on the road I could do it before anyone noticed.

Gotcha. So do you just set the thing back there or...where do you mount it? Also, how does the Eco tie into the truck's battery or the engine (or does it)? In other words, how does it charge.

I have a ridged brand “crate” to stick it in so it doesn’t fall over while driving. It came with a soft side case that is weather resistant.
I can charge it at home via outlet plug, I can charge it via the truck 12v using a 12v plug in and I can charge it via solar once I get some portable panels.
I’ll get a few more pics soon

Currently under construction. I hope to have the platform finished by the end of next weekend. ARE DCU cap with tool box on the drivers side and a full door with windows on the passenger side.
Should be a 27”x48” drawer and two vertical access locations with the side cubby for the time being. I’m sure time will force some changes.

Platform looks great so far! Which DCU height did you get? Are you happy with the build quality and fit? I'm planning to get a DCU wedge soon on a regular cab long bed.

Hey, sorry. I’ve been on a 3500 mile, 3 week road trip out of this setup.
This is the standard height dcu, 23”. Its certainly got its draw backs. I still am not really happy with the overall build quality. The tailgate flange was well over a 1/2” too long with no weather stripping installed from the factory. Welds are not great, all mig spool gun. It sticks out well past the cab and has a fair amount of wind noise. Tons of gaps around the rear hatch that allowed dust to get in. I threw a dual direction dog box vent in for positive pressure and it helped a ton. It’s still not perfect but it’s far better than it was.
All doors open almost too far if you’re under 6’ tall. I’m 6’3 and put limiting straps on 2 of the 3 doors.
It also came in scratched from shipping and handling but I talked the dealer down on the cost.
I wish I had gone with another brand to be honest. Leer makes an aluminum commercial unit that looks a little more sleek and has much better build options. Look into that.

Thanks for the report back @Kernal. It's honestly good to hear you recommending Leer because I've gotten the idea that ARE is the way to go with commercial caps, but I want a 23"-36" wedge and they won't build one, so I've been looking into Century (which as I understand it is basically rebranded Leer). I just started another thread for everyone with commercial aluminum caps to share their builds and discuss how to address issues as they arise. Jump in with some info about yours if you're so inclined: https://www.tundras.com/threads/commercial-aluminum-caps-lets-see-em.116277/#post-2989744

Working with a fabricator out of GA to build the below setup this June. One that would allow my wife and child to sleep in the bed (on a platform we build), while I sleep on top of a roof platform that extends over the cab; might go slightly longer than 86".

Allows me (6' 5") to sleep in a solo tent that will use rails and tie downs to keep the tent in place. The dog sleeps in the cab with the rear window and front topper window down, sealed off on the top with a custom tube (bike tube rig) only intended to keep rain out. We camp in fair weather most of the time (SW NC).

This is on an 06' DC
