I have a 2019 CrewMax with a 5.5' bed. I haven't been able to find a camper shell for it yet, so I was wondering if anyone has experience putting a bed rack with crossrails over the top of a soft top and get it to shed rain. I see some racks advertised as compatible with some tonneau or hard flip covers, but I don't see them mentioning a soft top. It doesn't help that the racks and the soft tops are made by different companies. I would like to carry kayaks above the soft top.
I know some lumber racks are made with flat steel mounts so a hard shell will go on top of the rack. I don't need anything as heavy or as long as a a lumber rack, though, I was just wondering if a rack mounting system was made to go around a soft top. I don't really need extensive mounts for off-roading equipment, just a structure to support kayak racks.

I was looking at the same set-up. Softopper actually has a rack on their website to use with the top and if you google softopper roof rack there are a few others out there.

If you want to mount or have a front and rear receiver hitch, you can get two convertible bed extenders that convert from horizontal to vertical positions. Got mine from Ebay pretty cheap and they are great for long items overhead. Your kayaks probably won't span that length, but you could easily throw a few 2x4's on edge up there first to create rails for your kayaks. Affordable (under $400 with lumber rails), versatile, easily transferable to other vehicles, etc. Good luck!

As a side note, I like the rack over the soft topper. However, $1600 for that?? WTF

Good information. Thank you. I completely missed that Softopper made its own rack. All option beat my closest Snugtop dealer's estimate ($4,400.+).

I'm still not sure how I could get kayak carriers mounted to the crossbars, particularly the Softopper Datin Cage Rack. They look way too wide, like most cage type racks. Most upright kayak supports mount to smaller luggage rack type crossbars. I don't really like spending time trying to improvise. I would think this would be a commonly desired option on cage racks. Kayaks are a good option if you are driving to an isolated waterway.

I contemplated this setup for a while (having come from a 2010 tundra DC which I found a color matched cap for $400)..

I decided on a hard folding cover and a power tailgate lock. Additionally added crossbars to the roof with basket.

I’ll load the basket with odd/weirdly shaped objects like camp chairs, canopies, tarps, etc.

The additional space on the bars, on either sides of the basket, will be used for fishing poles, pole saws, flag poles for the campsite, basically anything long and lightweight.

How about a trailer? So much versatility.
