Truly waterproof is next to impossible. Closest is likely the least attractive, which is the old style fiberglass hinged by the cab that wraps over the sides of the bed and tailgate. Then you have to seal up the tailgate area gaps. The rest typically use drain tubes to redirect water and rely on proper adjustments to keep a good seal contact to keep water out. They work ok, but are not truly waterproof.

Been happy with the BAK Revolver x4s so far. It lets a little water in at the tailgate but nothing to really worry about for me. There are no drain tubes to worry about either. I would agree with Knabores that none are really waterproof and I don't think any make that claim, at least the roll up or fold up models.

I 2nd the Revolver. That said it was not waterproof out of the box. Added a tailgate seal kit which you have to do for any topper. Then some extra horizontal stripping between tailgate edges and the truck at the tip.

The only water proof cover I have ever had was a one piece one that overhangs all 4 bed sides. But removing those is a PITA and they don't look as good

Got a link &/or some pics? My MX4 is pretty dry except for the tailgate corners. Is there a seal kit that's better than others?

I have the Retrax MX also. Almost no water at tailgate. The only water I see is drained thru the tubes of the roller takeup reel and drain out of the bed thru the drain tubes. I would buy another if this got damaged. Absolutely not the lowest price, but one of the best IMO. Very satisfied. I got it from Real Trucks and the first two that came were damaged from the factory. They paid for the shipping back for return.

DM SantanaRealtruck. He will at least give you a quote. They carry more than the Retrax at RealTruck.

I’ve also had a positive experience with my Retrax. Not waterproof but pretty darn good. I’ll also give a nod to the ESI Ultimate Tailgate Seal. Took me a few tries to get it in all the right places but once you crack the code it does a fantastic job of keeping out water (and dust).

You only want the lock to be waterproof?

    this is the way.

you will need to weatherstrip the tailgate.

One necessity with any cover is a rubber bed mat. Any water that leaks in at any corner goes under the mat and out the front drains or out the back and your load stays dry.

x2 to this. I didn't weather proof anything, and didn't use the drain tube. All the water drains around the bed mat. Anything on the mat stays relatively dry.

Got a diamondback switchback about a month ago. We got some very heavy rains last week and I got no water in the bed at all.

On the bed mat, how grippy are these? I haul a pedal drive fishing kayak in the bed of my truck almost weekly. I have the kayak on a cart and slide it into the bed. Will the mat keep it from sliding in easily?

    Thanks!

I had a rubber mat in my last truck and I would say it won't cause you any issues sliding in the kayak. Less slippery for sure, but not a big problem. I plan on getting one for the latest truck as that composite bed is like a skating rink...

It definately has grip when clean. Sliding a heavy cardboard box or lumber on it can be tough. Wouldn’t trust it to keep anything from slipping out with the gate down. Always tie down anything.
