So I believe my interstate battery is shot and doesn't keep a charge. I was reading alot of threads and some guys switched to a 27F battery. My question is way go with a 27 instead of a 24? The CCA and CA is higher on the 24F. Is the 27F just have reserve capacity?

I skimmed through 2 articles about the differences, but both seemed like they were written by doofuses. my battery tray will fit the 27, so the better deal would probably be whichever is cheaper?

What battery specs are those for as I see the 27F has higher numbers then the 24. The interstate is the opposite.

27f seems to be the go-to for the towing package trucks according to toyotanation and tacoma world. I replaced mine with what was in there cause like 4 of my vehicles use 24f, and shuffled em around so i could trade in the oldest one.

Yea most likely I'll go with 27F then, plus I'm thinking of doing a second 27F for accessories.

Something that impressed me. I purchased a odyssey AGM marine battery for my boat. The battery sits all winter and is always keeps a full charge. I use some electronics on the boat, and it always starts.
Since my truck tends to sit and I use it when I need a truck (vs daily transportation). So thinking this may be a better option.

My current Toyota battery needs to be refreshed to hold a change if it sits too long.

I know your question revolved around a 24F. vs 27F. But if you need to purchase a replacement, I though this might be useful.

Marine batteries are designed for deep cycle and intermittent use. You truck will always draw some current when off. If your going to let it sit for a month best to disconnect battery. My 2000 has a flooded 27F only because I got it free from warranty after last one died a premature death. My 2018 has a 24F AGM with same CCA as the OEM flood 27F it replaced. 27F AGMs are hard to find except the super expensive one sold at Batteries and Bulbs. I've not had any issues with charging the 24F but those who use the 27F AGM seem to use the voltage boost diode in place of the alternator fuse.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I was not recommenhding a marine battery. The AGM battery comes in automotive and truck version. If he needs a new battery, I wanted him to consider that.

Good point to signal out here - if you upgrade to AGM, there's other stuff you need to do.

    Correct

Towing package trucks were equipped with an uprated alternator and the 27F battery.

I just replaced a 7 year Napa battery that was showing signs of failing, at about 7 1/2 years. Fits like a glove and I will probably get another 7 years service from it. My friend that owns a couple of Napa's says the 7 year Napa batteries are a good value and usually do at least 7 years of service. No need to overthink this.

Marine batteries come in several types. Starting, deep cycle and dual usage are common types. Not sure what makes them marine batteries, possibly more vibration resistant? Not sure.

If the napa isnt double priced it sounds like a good deal. My oldest battery is 5 years old, but they only have a 1 year warranty. But the few days a year i freeze i run all my stuff that runs. Jump it if i need. A little engine bay warmth goes a long way. 10/21 i think was $70.

I used to spend a bunch of time researching and comparing expensive battery options. I would run them until they went bad, don't think I ever got much over 4-5 years on one in this Texas heat. Now I just use a regular interstate from Costco, but replace them all after 3 years of service. For 40 bucks a year, I worry very little about a dead battery at an inopportune time. I pay the core charge and let my buddy run my old ones in his various farm equipment.

One thing I do, and curious if anyone else does this and if it actually helps....

I use the Tundra when I need a truck to haul or carry a load. For grocery shopping and other daily chores, I use the Corolla XRS.

If some time has passed, I charge the battery. Sometimes even hit the “refresh” cycle.

Since my truck is a 2020, I have no way of knowing if this is helpful.

Why not just get one of those solar trickle chargers? Could save you a lot of battery tending for under $30.

Didn't think of that as sometimes the truck is in the garage.

Does it work if you plug it in to the USB port when the truck is off? That seems to be the best way if that will work. Not sure about the hook up directly to the battery. I guess your have to leave the solar part outside the truck. Any recommendations on a good unit?

No recommendations, and can't comment on operations, I'm sure each unit is different.

There are a few guys running them over here on the 1st Gen forum, they may be able to comment. Seems like 1st Gens tend to see more sidelined usage.

Like you, mine stays in the garage most of its life, except when out actually working.

Dirt Deeds injectors, Addco rear sway, AEM dry flow air filter, last ever set of Stan's Try-Y headers, Borla full custom exhaust, front level, wheel spacers, and lots of electronics.
Just stick a Group 4D in the bed in a marine box and run cables under the hood. Hahaha.

Kidding aside, I can get 4Ds and 8Ds from work so I seriously planned on doing this. Not icluding the battery: marine box, wires, fittings, and remote terminals come out to around $330. Planned to have the marine box under the toneau cover in the bed close to the cab, and run 2AWG wire up the frame rail to a remote positive and negative post where the OE battery would have been.

My Napa 7 year battery cost $160.00, if history is a guide, I won't have a failure (the last two each went 7 plus years and never left me stranded) and I won't have to think about a battery until about 2029, when my tundra will be 28 years old.

I went with a 27F Interstate battery. It will be 4 years old in January. I bought a bigger battery tray from Toyota to hold it. So far so good.

Went Walmart 3 year because it doesn’t seem to matter what I buy they last 3-4 years. Texas Heat is just to much for any battery. Project Pharm on YouTube led me to Walmart.
I can’t get stranded in West Texas. Every three years I just drop a new one in.
