Hello all. Have my truck in a shop right now after getting lean codes and being unable to diagnose myself (replaced MAF and cleaned throttle body to no avail). Turns out it’s a bad fuel pump. Recently also noticed my coolant level dropping, however I’ve never overheated (drove about 600 miles in a day recently, no issues). Mentioned this to the same shop who is doing the fuel pump. They did a combustion test on the coolant and are telling me there is slight color change showing a small head gasket leak. Anyone know of anything else this could possibly be aside from the head gasket? Does combustion gas in the coolant always indicate a bad head gasket as an absolute? Or is there any other possible source?

I’m away for work for a couple weeks until I can get back to look at anything on the truck, but until then I’m trying to figure out if there’s anything else I can look out for.

    What were the codes?

our fuel pumps almost NEVER go bad unless you like to run it on empty often. Then I could see it happening.

And as one who has over heated his truck. It's REALLY hard to fucking kill these things.
    How's your engine oil look?

P0174 was stored and P0171 was pending. The truck is new to me so I can’t speak to how often it might’ve been driven on empty previously

    ?

I’m not asking about the lean codes at all. That’s been resolved, it’s been determined to be a bad fuel pump. Just included that for context.

my question here pertains to the coolant leak and head gasket

Given 174 is Bank 2 lean and 171 is Bank 1, 171 would have been stored sooner or later.

Not questioning their findings and according to how much you trust them or know about them, I would be inclined to letting them finish the fuel pump install, thank them for their service and then go from there once you get home...JMPO !

I'll also add this. Did they checked the coolant levels as well? And it's sure that it's losing coolant?

They pressure tested your radiator cap? And made sure the petcocks were all closed tight and working properly? all the hoses are in god shape with no noticeable residue anywhere. The radiator is within 5 years old and shows no discoloration?

ALL of these should have been tested. Looked over.

    To put it into PERSPECTIVE.

ALL of that I just mentioned costs HALF of what doing a head gasket on these trucks would cost.

    ;)
