When backing up boat trailer I get beep beep beep then brakes slam on. I am in trailer mode on shift, and the tundra says “trailer detected”. Yet the vehicle thinks I’m about to hit person or object and keeps slamming brakes on. There is a red brake warning also.

I have turned off all 5 protections on the maintenance screen. Even with all off, boom… brakes slam on.

Toyota says bring to dealer. There has to be something I’m doing wrong or that others have experienced.

You have turned off the one that has the little traffic cone icon I assume? If that's off it could be that the sensors need to be re calibrated. There was another thread a while back with the same complaint and the dealer fixed it under warranty.

That is exactly my problem, but unfortunately that fix does not work. I turn off the little cone, but still get brakes. And trust me. It makes a person say bad words really loud.

I do believe a trip to the dealer is in your future. The traffic cone is all you should have to turn off.

Yes. A few others here have reported the same issues that Trailer Mode and the Auto Collision button are not bypassing auto collision braking. Dealer has a fix.

Does your boat have surge brakes?

Yes. And it's the Tundra braking not the trailer. The solenoid that prevents braking when in reverse is working fine.

Just to confirm, are you getting reverse lights on the trailer?

Yes. It's not the trailer locking up. I know what that is right. I am getting the "beep, beep, beep", then the red BRAKE warning on the display and the brakes SLAM on.

If turning off the parking sensors (button with car backing into a cone) doesn't solve your problem, you need to visit the dealership. I tow trailers and boats a lot, so I just leave the parking sensor button off permanently.

I got this same issues the first few times I used the trailer. Yes, there's a button above your left knee, turn it off and everything is working as designed.

Did you set up your trailer profile? Also I'm sure you are but make sure your trailer electric is plugged in. I had the same issue when I was trying to move the trailer around the yard real quick without plugging it in.

Mine won't back if my door isn't closed. Are you a boat backer hanger outer??

If you have the door open and then put the truck in gear it will hit the brakes if you move the truck. The work around is after you put the truck in gear, put it back in park then back in gear. A bit of a PIA but at least there is a bypass.

yep....just thought it may be pretty easy at a boat ramp to not realize the open door was the problem.

Ha! Didn't put two and two together when you said "boat backer hanger outer". Hadn't had any coffee yet....

Two pieces of advice I always gave to the kids of my fishing buddies: Marry rich and learn how to back up a trailer with your mirrors.

Years ago my Dad told me "the back wheels of the truck are the front wheels of the trailer". Problem solved.

I have this issue also. Doors are closed and I have hit the button lower left of the steering wheel to disable the sensors and still it occasionally does the brake slam warning thing. And whether I'm at the ramp or blocking the street backing into my driveway, it really sucks when it does.

    Saw this in another thread:
I mainly just tow a boat trailer with surge brakes and a 5 pin connector (5th pin for trailer brake reverse override which works properly).

So I guess my questions are:
    • Even with the truck identifying my trailer and me pushing the button, is it correct that I should not be getting this warning and per LayK's post, is it likely a bad sensor?
    • Anyone else have this actual issue (not operator error) with a positive resolution?
    • Is there a good diagnostic procedure for the tech to test this?
    • Is there a TSB on this?
My dealer says I need to bring the boat trailer to them and reproduce the issue. Since they aren't close, that would be a PITA so I'm hoping to be able to come to them with more definitive info and ability to troubleshoot that doesn't require me to drag the boat to them.

Wasn't it you that had the bad senor causing this issue? (Apologies if my memory is incorrect)

So someone rear ended me my 3rd week of owning this truck, and when they repaired my rear bumper my rear sensors were bad. They said sometimes they also come bad. It sucks but you might have to just drive to the dealer with your boat. I live 10 minutes from mine and had a small 10 foot trailer I brought to replicate the issue.
