Did you ask for this? And what possible benefit to you does this do?
I bought a vehicle not a spy machine

It’s nothing your cell phone hasn’t been doing for the last 20 years. People’s data is the most valuable asset in todays world, it’s how Google makes all there money…..

I have been shopping insurance quotes lately since Allstate thinks I am a billionaire apparently.

One insurer in their online quotes has a box asking if you want to use available driving data to calculate your quote. Assume many of the others just do it behind the scenes

    LED headlamps/fogs; interior footlamps.
Its the reason I use the minimal amount of fone apps - too much access. Besides most web apps work on a fone and have far more features than the typical same business using an app - why be so limited in functions?

just means they want you to connect a odb2 sensor to your access port to tracking your driving habits and then upload that data to them to raise your rates.

state farm tried that with me, but i refused. i am grandfathered into very old plans that are no longer offered so no point in switching.

$100/100 collision/comp deductibles, min now is like $250/$250 or was it $500/$500. not sure, dont care :)

to change it to $250 the rate only goes up like $7, not that big of a deal

Phone itself is data mining you with zero apps loaded. Fact of modern life.

But if you want the features tech contributes to your quality of life the deal you gotta make

I know my phone does that stuff. Its the nature of the device. A car manufacturer has no reason at all to collect this data and people drove without it for decades. No to everything Toyota

I don’t think that anybody who is willing to create an account and post on an online forum is overly concerned with internet security….

Your tv is likely already collecting your data, along with the data of every device that ever gets connected to the same WiFi network.
Ever wonder why you randomly start getting ads on your devices for Roombas? Because your phone knows you or someone on the same WiFi network as you were in the same room with one at some point. It then told your tablet, your laptop, and your coffee maker about it.

Nope. That was another question screen to opt in the driving dongle.

Thus screen was specific to do you want us to use data we have bought to impact your quote? If you clicked the ? It listed a blue billion information sources including Google, Apple, ISPs, all mobile phones, social media, all the auto companies, and companies I have never heard of.

I've posted this before but here you go. Auto manufacturers are some of the worst when it comes to data privacy....

And just to give an example, here's an excerpt from Nissan's user agreement:

Nissan earned its second-to-last spot for collecting some of the creepiest categories of data we have ever seen. It’s worth reading the review in full, but you should know it includes your “sexual activity.” Not to be out done, Kia also mentions they can collect information about your “sex life” in their privacy policy. Oh, and six car companies say they can collect your “genetic information” or “genetic characteristics.” Yes, reading car privacy policies is a scary endeavor.

Obviously “they” do have a reason to collect data or else they wouldn’t be doing it. It’s their product, and they are free to design it as they see fit, just as consumers have a choice regarding purchasing the product. It has not been any big secret that vehicle manufacturers are collecting data. A little research would have clarified that.

You would pretty much need to disable any sort of LTE and GPS on your truck to not be tracked, but also not bring any phone with you. Even older non-"smartphones" tracked tower location. Modern phones are constantly logging everything, regardless of the apps. Personally, I could not give two shits. Whoever is looking at my data is probably scratching their head as to how I can visit Taco Bell so much and still be alive.

They have a reason....Money, they make money off selling your data.

You could have bought a different vehicle. Is it Ok?, no not really, but it is the reality we live in.

Yes, I have been getting Toyota Insurance emails from Progressive to switch to their insurance since according to Toyota I am a safe driver. I know the data is tracked by Toyota from the driver's interface and the subscription services you have.

All insurance is high right now, and some carriers are not even taking new customers. It is what it is but while the full coverage insurance is not that bad, my wifes Timberline is crazy high. Makes no sense for a Truck that costs roughly 20k more than a Timberline Explorer is less than the Ford.

The real question is what use is the data?

Consumer protection laws on the books forbid a consumer to be "unmasked" through this type of data collection.

If, for whatever reason, someone eventually finds out that their personal information, and/or personal communication, was used in any manor without their explicit consent (not recorded or monitored, but actually used to identify them personally) that person will likely have a Tundra model named after them when the lawyers are done.

Have big tech recorded our data since the inception of such analytics? Of course.

Has anyone, outside of a criminal investigation (specifically a warrant for that information) or outside of a civil judge's subpoena, been "unmasked" ? Very unlikely, as there is great liability for the tech company at that point.

    *this is not legal advice*

Big Brother is watching and here to stay. Be careful what you say or do, the men in black might show up!

It sucks, but that's the way it is theses days. I remember a few years ago fruit of the loom was putting chips in underwear to track how much they were worn & washed.

I think BMW is the worst, but all those map apps that help up thru traffic jams get it from cellphones and auto
downloads from car computers. If you really want to 'see' the scary side of the future 'RayBan Meta Glasses'.
Keep cash in a safe, ammo in the bunker, more fuel than you think you might need in cans, food in the pantry.
It all is fairly accountable, understandable - right up until the wrong people hack it and collect it.

There are a few threads that are coming up around this topic. Don't connect your phone and disconnect the antenna.

But I just want to know, are you all going through with the necessary measures elsewhere (where they're more important)? I'm talking ALWAYS using VPN to hit your home network when away, VLANs to segment ALL IoT devices (or just not incorporating them), using no autonomy/automation at home unless self-hosted with Home Assistant, network wide adaptation of SearXNG or tor client, etc? There's more to big data than your truck...
