I found this mounting plate that replaces the face of the ashtray on firstgentundra.com (I am not affiliated with the site and have no discount code to offer). The ashtray is really just wasted space. I don't smoke, and if I did, I wouldn't use the ashtray. I also don't use it as a change dish. So when I found this mounting plate I figured it would be a good option for mounting my Garmin GPS with a RAM mount. I just tried mounting the RAM mount and realized I need some small washers, which I will get tomorrow. I think it will be a cool little add-on when I'm finished.

Post some pictures when you're done. Where did you buy the mounting plate?

From a website that someone posted here. firstgentundra.com, looks like he's just getting started with his store. He has this plate, and some molle panels that go on the rear access cab windows, and some shirts, hats, and stickers. Communication was great as I had a few questions about the mounting plate and got quick responses.

I like the way it turned out. I think its gonna work. It obscures the 4HI button somewhat, but I can live with that.

The plate is a neat idea. I’m shocked anyone still uses a garmin or any gps unit like that today.

Call me old school. I only use it on road trips when my phone is busy doing other stuff.

Even our local auction house no longer accepts them, just like tube tvs lol. I haven’t seen one in years.

It doesn't keep track of you like all other navigation systems. :spy:

There are still many spots in the land where cell coverage is poor, or even non existent. What happens then is that no map new map data is downloaded, and you're looking at a cursor on a blank screen. I keep my Garmin handy when I venture off to parts unknown.

Apple gives you the ability to download offline maps. I'm sure google can do that too. Yes, it's not going to have cell service to show your current location, so it's like reading a for real map like we did back in the day.

Mapping apps will still show your current location via GPS if you do not have cell service/ mobile data.

Dead stock with oem 16" starfish wheels. We'll see how long that lasts. :) Topper of unknown origin.
Are we sure that Garmin, etc. don't keep track of our locations? I'm guessing they want to monetize that data like the rest of 'em.

Regardless, I boxed up my Garmin years ago and download google and Gaia maps on my phone to use with its gps. No cell service needed.

There shouldn’t be two way communication for their gps units unless it’s for traffic info and that’s basic at best.

i use an old backup phone for dedicated maps apps like "Trails Offroad app" when I'm doing my "overlanding" trips (camping off dirt roads). Pretty good setup!

I actually prefer my older MIO gps on occasion from 2007 when going somewhere new. I can easily drop waypoints and manually re-route a suggested path to my liking without it automatically re-routing on me.

Only downside were no upgraded maps since the Aussies designed/built it.
