So after 140,000 miles, I need new rear wheel bearings. Both sides.

OK, fine. Now I’ve replaced wheel bearings before and it’s not a job that I really want to do again so I’m planning on hiring it out.

here’s a thing: One mechanic wants me to bring it in so that he can inspect it, because he says that there are “two versions of this. And you can’t tell from the VIN number. One version is easy it’ll cost you $550 per side, the other version is hard and it’ll cost you $850 per side.”

Has anyone here ever heard of such nonsense? Since when would Toyota create two different versions of the hub assembly and the wheel bearing assembly in the rear on a 2010 Tundra? Am I being fed a line?

Maybe it’s different between the 5.7 and 4.6 (4.7?)? Does the smaller engine have the 10.5 rear axle? You’d think they could tell that from your vin though. Check an online parts catalog.
