Hey Guys -- I couldnt find any thread around it and hence posting one.

I have 22 Capstone - just hit 50K on it and its going great ( no complaints yet). Now - with all the news on recall and as my truck is not included - just wondering if any of the Hybrids are part of the recall? I did see some Hybrids under Engine failures on the excel, but the % was comparatively low.

I thought about checking with Toyota - but have a feeling that I would just get an open ended generic response.

I am not much worried as such, but curious on where the Hybrids land on the recalls.

    Any pointers would be appreciated.

I cant verify this but I read in another thread a person saying that our hybrid 3.4 is the exact same and suffers the same problem but not recalled yet since the hybrid system wouldnt leave us stranded.

Im fine with that, give me all the time I need to put a ton of miles on the current engine before I get a new one right?

The Hybrid is not specifically included in the recall due to "motive power still being present from the hybrid" even with an engine failure. There have been reports of owners losing that ability when having an engine failure.

It is and has been confirmed that the Hybrid engine is produced on the same assembly line at TMMAL as the non-hybrid variant. The "hybrid" blocks are cleaned in the same machines as the "non-hybrid". The same block is used across all Tundra & Sequoia.

There are ZERO differences to the short block - including external structures and internal parts - from non-hybrid and Hybrid.

You'll still be stranded with a hybrid you just might have the ability to pull the truck out of traffic and thats about the only reason hybrids aren't included in the recall. They hybrid just has an electric motor that should be able to move the vehicle after the engine dies a short distance . Basically the non-hybrid the engine could die and leave you in the middle of traffic with no way to move which is a huge liability for Toyota. The non-hybrids get a new engine simply because of the safety issue of not being able to move after the engine dies. Same identical engines between hybrid and non-hybrid.

Hybrid owners with failures have reported being unable to move the vehicle after failure.

Yep thats why I said should be able to move...doesn't sound like Toyota's justification really lines up with reality

It 100% does not. They are dealing with something they've never had to deal with at this scale in their history. And it most assuredly shows.

Hybrids have the same motor as the recalled ones. The ONLY reason the hybrids weren’t included in the recall is because you can use the hybrid system to safely steer the vehicle off the road using the hybrid system, since the steering is electronically controlled. I feel like this is an oversight by Toyota, but I get why it’s only been issued for non hybrid models.

I don't think it's an oversight at all. I think it's intentional to lower the demand for recall engines so they can basically do it in stages. I imagine they handle any actual failures the same for hybrid or non-hybrid, but they're staggering the two recalls to lighten the load. It let's the recalled number of trucks be smaller so there is a little less of a black eye, and I'm sure they are doing that to preserve stock prices.
