Just like the title says, anyone using say maybe 5W-30 instead of 0W-20. Just asking, see what people think/use....

Well to be fair, I was specifically looking at 3rd gen owners.

Ahhh, well then probably only about 10k threads, haha.

"Oil"and "what size tire fits" threads are the most by far!
Put it the search feature. You'll find more reading than you'll care to do

I hate the way people treat you on this forum just for asking a question! Like you got time to read through all these threads. Plus it’s a pain to search. Sorry for the reaction.

I poked around and didn't see any specific to third Gen. (Because they are drown out by the 1.5 million threads about this in the 5.7).

On the 5.7, it was confirmed that the same engine called for 5w30 in other markets. The 2012 owners manual even suggests running a heavier weight if you are working the truck hard.

I am also curious what folks have to say about 5w30 in 22+ v6.

    From the 2012 5.7 manual:

"An oil with a higher viscosity (one with a higher
value) may be better suited if the vehicle is operated at high speeds, or under extreme load conditions."

The 3rd Gen manual doesnt make the same comments that the second gen did about 0w20 being recommended, but that 5w20 was acceptable for an oil change.

I'm mostly convinced it's all epa nonsense and 5w30 would serve better.

There is the question of warranty though...

When you search you also have the option of using advanced search and filtering only on the 22+ forum. I only use 0w20 because that’s what Toyo recommends.

I think if you are going to push the engine hard with towing or adding boost, it would be good to run thicker oil. For example, stock GTR runs on 5w40 while built engine, 15w50 oil is recommended.

Euro rates oils have a higher standard. They are typically thicker rated even in the 0W20 flavors. Our oils are thinner to keep the fuel economy nazis happy. I can guarantee you that the same engine in other countries will say to use 5, 10W30,40 or even 50.

Not to mention we can only discuss so many things before we end up talking in circles. It doesn't hurt anyone to just answer a simple a question and let the thread disappear into history.

I ran 5w30 on the last 2, on the next one I'm going back to 0w20 and adding half a qt of Lucas. My truck works pretty hard with a 1400lb camper on it full time.

I went straight STP on my last change. Seems to be ok. Does take a while to pour in 7.7 quarts though......

I used 5/30 for a bit before the engine recall...no noticeable difference. Only used it because its what I had on hand from previous cars

Lucas is nothing magical. All you’re doing is thickening the oil. Run the 5W30 if that’s the case.

I have a couple quarts laying around that I got for dirt cheap, might as well use it. What I want to do is a sludge flush but I don't really trust the additives like that

I will be switching to 5W-30 after my last freebie Toyota oil change- there was a page from the international LC 300 manual posted that show these engines can run 0w-20 to 10W-30

Amazing how many mfg do that for international stuff.

I'd likely run Penzoil Ultimate Platnium and a synthetic blend Purolator filter.

Also this video is pretty ineteresting- says that these light oils are truly just CAFE stuff and not for engine longevity:

I'm sure Toyota designed this engine with the plan to run 0w20. It would be great to talk with a Toyota engine engineer about oil and learn if it's all about economy or if 0w20 does protect as well as 5w30.

With all the engine drama we have going on it seems like last thing we need is to trust forum experts who think oil viscosity listed for our truck is just for EPA compliance. You believe what you want; I’m sticking to the oil spec listed in the manual and the only revision I’m willing to introduce is more frequent oil change intervals (every 5,000 miles).

But as dJunior said this motor is said to be running 10W-30 in other parts of the world….why would that be?

Cause America! American Tundra's can only be run on 0w-20. Because the manual says so. The manual for American market Tundras is like the Bible. And Toyota engineers are Gods. And we must obey the Gods or we will face the their wraith and the world as we know it will face destruction unlike anything we've ever known. Or at least your engine will. But remember, those same Gods also developed the 3.4 twin turbo engine that will probably blow up anyway. So, you know, there's that. But, anyway, appease the fanboys Gods!

OR, be like me and laugh in the face of the EPA, the Gods, the oil fill cap, and the manual fanboys everywhere, and watch that beautiful, smooth, thick, liquid gold come pouring out of that 5w-30 container 8.5 times every 5k miles!

5w30 is water, too. Diesel-grade 15w40 conditioned overnight in cold garage with no heating is what every engine likes. Some BMW punks go to 20w50, but that's a waste of money.
