Seriously - I am getting sooo damn tired of hearing there’s a “chip shortage” causing problems in vehicle production.

Yes, there are not enough semiconductors to go around between manufacturers- mainly due to the same reasons we saw gas top $3 recently - a small disruption in one supplier, everyone deciding they needed a years worth of gas today and suppliers taking advantage of panicked buyers.

The “shortage” has more to do with higher demand than lack of production capability - makers are building trucks as fast as they can - and trying to stockpile components to ensure a steady supply. The production lines rely on having everything in place and ready when needed - a blip in supply is very costly and a lot of makers got burned earlier this year - and refuse to let that happen again.

I am getting tired of hearing dealers say “it’s all a chip shortage”….No, it’s a brain cell shortage and a over abundance of free cash situation ! People are spending because they can - low payments, extra $$ in pocket and a fear of missing out has created a new car bubble.

Also - can we please stop the “How much can I get for it” post ? I mean seriously - there are 3 vendors that will give pricing easily on their site (Carvana, Vroom, Carnax) for most vehicles. Go to all 3 - enter your VIN and add together/divide by 3 - there’s a good number to start from…selling private party add 15% and negotiate down to 5-10% above for a fair price.

And no - the chip shortage DOES NOT make your 2008 with 189k more valuable. It does not effect values of cars 2019 or older in reality….comparing late model used to plain old used is like comparing supermodels to the prettiest girl in school. Yes, there may some gems mixed in the used market - but late model used are all gems - no sorting required. If it’s got more than 30k on the odometer- it’s not as desirable.

Rant over - back to the invigorating discussion on how often to change our oil and why AMS is worth $9 a quart.

Well if we start running out of corn tortilla chips and hot salsa...there will be problems.

In Colorado, that would start an uprising. Lucky for us, Colorado is plentiful in the chips department.

Nothing like making tacos and fajitas at home for dinner, whipping up some home made salsa with home grown jalapeños and habaneros, and finding out your kid ate all the tortilla chips.

I got a screaming deal on a new Corolla at the end of March. Everyone says there is a shortage but the dealer was more than happy to work with me.

    Lighten up Francis, jeesh.

It's not a blip. COVID caused major disruptions, which still have not been recovered from. Makers are not building trucks as fast as they can, they're slashing entire product lines because they can't get the components.

Just wait til you hear about the cost of steel and other metals going up, while the dollar is going down.

If you're tired about hearing the reason why things are unsable, then just go listen to some classical music or hug your teddy bear. Complaining gets you nowhere.
