Anyone care to hear about my bad luck today?

Here’s a kick in the nuts for me. Guy at the dealership calls this am telling me someone hit the truck I was in the process of buying and picking up Saturday. TRD Pro Crew Max. Beautiful truck. PS rear door, 1/4, wheel, and rear bumper all hit. I thought he was putting me on since I know the guy, and trust him. Nope, just my luck, he sent me a pic. Truck is in the body shop now. I’m almost certain I’m not taking it now. Thoughts?

 

Nope...don't buy it unless you get a substantial discount...and then look for another!

Well... At least you know. I bought my truck "new", but it had been wrecked prior to my purchase. Word is they don't have to tell you if it's less than $500. The customer's deductible was $500 so I wasn't advised of Shit, had all kinds of electrical issues. I would second the reworked deal with a steep discount.

 

I wouldn't buy it. If I am buying a new truck, I don't want a newly wrecked and fixed truck. Also, if it is going to appear on a Carfax I certainly wouldn't buy it.

Tell them to replace the rear bumper as stock (painted resin caps) at their expense.

Well, it would have been new to me as its a ‘21 with 35k. Now I’m just wondering what kind of discount we can negotiate. Will it still appear on a CarFax if they take care of it “in house”? It’s the hit on the selling end in addition to damage that I’m worried about.

 

At least he/she didn't hit your ride getting there to the dealership too.

 

The bumper ends are already painted body color.

 

That would be my exact fear too. If I had to guess, I bet it wouldn't appear on a carfax, because they wont report it. If you know and trust him, I'd ask him point blank and tell him you don't want it if the accident shows on its history, since that changes the truck's value.

If I bought it, I'd negotiate a lower price AND some form of longer warranty. Who knows what you might run into later.

 

He did tell me he’d give me first crack at the truck and won’t sell it until I inspect. I know what I’m looking at and he and the dealership are all upstanding. He said we can further discuss price if I find the repair work satisfactory, he assured me I would. I’m just concerned about cosmetic longevity as I know shit prep makes for shit repairs that don’t show up for years. Structural damage and repairs are easy to see. I’m tending to keep away at this point. I’m in no rush. He even offered me a screaming deal on a new truck on the floor but I want the 5.7. No ttv6 for me.

If possible, look at the damage. How it got hit? Was somebody driving a delivery truck and didn't see it and slowly scrape the passenger side? Or was it a hit with force?

 

Sideswipe. Doesn't look terrible but I didn’t have a chance to get out of work to look before it went to the shop. Guy did say it was worse than appeared in the picture. We’ll see…

I hope you get what will ultimately make you happy, be it a better price on that one, or one of the MANY other trucks out there.

If you decide to go for it; tell him you’ll take it for 25k out the door with a 6 year 120k warranty. Straight faced. If he says no, then at least you’ve set the bar super low and in your favor for negotiations.

Also, and this is how it used to be, you can’t buy a Toyota warranty after 36k, so make sure that thing has 35,999 miles or less. Ask me how I know

 

Nope. Walk away. Enough stuff happens to a new vehicle when it leaves the lot much less accepting one that has already been in an accident.

 

The guys a friend of a friend so I don't wan't to come off as a complete douche, but point well taken, thank you, and I didn't know about that 36k bs. Truck has about 32, so I'm good to go. Thanks ditto.

Don’t buy a vehicle brand new truck with an accident on the carfax lol … but seriously do what makes you happy

 

If it were me, unless the discount was massive I'd just stay away. You're always gonna have that feeling of knowing it's damaged.

 

I bought mine gently used and in perfect shape. My wife was driving it while I was out of town and someone side swiped her. She felt horrible about it but she and the truck were fine. There was cosmetic damage to the rear drivers side door, the cab corner, and the bedside. Had it all repaired at the body shop for the local Toyota dealer. They did a decent job. Paint match is great. I had them redo some body work on the can corner and redo some of the paint work. It’s pretty good now, but I know it was in a wreck. It only bothers me when I think about selling it. I know it will affect resale. And yeah, diminished value and all that from the insurance didn’t happen.

 

I know, it’s a beautiful truck but it’s almost like a stolen recovery to me now. It’s been fouled and my brain says to forget it and move on.

 

That feeling won’t get better. It will fester.

Honestly there is enough in this world to fester over right now. I just always tell myself… trucks are just metal after all

Yea.. most dealers from my experience won’t even mention 5000 worth of damage pre delivery… I work for a dealer and still say their the shadiest things on the face of the earth.
