I am wondering if the lack of the Tranny Cooler is a big enough deal to not get a '19-'21.

I know it costs around $1000 to install.

I have been scavenging the interwebs looking for a 1794 - '18, maybe I should look newer.

Is the Transmission Cooler that big a deal or is it something not to worry about?

I will probably be towing a significant Airstream with it, say 23-25 footer.

I am leaning towards the '18 due to the obvious T.Cooler but also LED headlights and the electronic goodies that come with the '18's

I thank you in advance for your answers.....

I just bought a '21 because I wasn't happy with the '22 offering. I'll be adding a cooler to it. My parents tow a 27' international with their stock '12 Tundra. You forget it's back there while towing.

I don't tow heavy with my '20 but if you're spending 40-50k on a Tundra, might as well spend the extra 1k for the cooler if you want the extra assurance.

Then again, there's multiple cooler threads on here with tons of debate. So lets not make this another one lol

no regrets really, i am pissed I didnt get a CD player though on my 21 lol. I installed the tranny cooler too, can only help, I dont tow much but drive around fully loaded with the fam and gear often. Made a noticable difference and more importantly, makes me feel better.

I'm talking with an airstream renovator that has a 24' trailer from the 70's. He's booked out a year, so I wouldn't get it until next summer if we can land a deal.

Yeah .. I hear ya - peace of mind goes a long way in ownership.

And "YES" I didn't intend this thread to go the direction of the T.Cooler talk. Plenty of that elsewhere, as I've scoured that topic heavily.

Albeit, it does play into my to buy or not to buy scenario.

Maybe I am over thinking it too.

Just get the one ya want and live with it or mod it as is needed down the road. (*not so "turn-key" - right??*)

I "regret" not being able to afford one, so I am missing some of the features I wish I had, larger fuel tank, reverse tilt mirrors, adaptive cruise.

If towing anything significant or long durations I would add a trans cooler, not even worth debating imho, cheap insurance.

Just get one that you are happy with. The led headlights are an easy mod....$650 or so for the TRD Pro led headlights. The TSS safety stuff is on the 18s and up. I love the radar cruise control.

I’m a truck guy like most here, and I bought a 21 knowing this. Didn’t bother me enough to not make the purchase, and I put it to work. I will eventually this spring add a cooler, though. Not because I’m afraid, but mostly because it’s a project for me

"No regerts" on my 21 Pro. I added a cooler and recently hauled stuff 600 miles. Not sure what it weighed but it definitely affected handling and braking. I monitored temps as well and noticed temps were higher while cruising down long declines but no rigorous scientific method to that cause I was focused on driving not data taking.

I wouldn't stick to years with tranny coolers just because. I'd buy a later year and add it. Just my $0.02

Whatever this forum told me to do

I like the simplicity of my '20. I added the cooler.

Carplay is nice. the safety crap is nice too.

Easy modification. Just buy this part cooler assembly with thermostat PN 32970-34030 and then which is an easy swap out for the space on the 2019-on and then whatever brand cooler you like. Can plumb with Toyota hardlines or just use rubber cooler lines.

I'm super happy with my '21. I looked at some 18s - for the same reason, the transmission oil cooler. But I liked that the newer ones had more charging ports, CarPlay with the slightly larger nav screen, the antenna delete, smart key access, etc.

I do tow, and towed all last summer, including a 700 mile trip in 100+ degree heat (a lot of S4 driving). I did okay with transmission temperatures, but I don't want to spend another summer staring at that gauge so I too will likely add a cooler this spring. I just need to convince myself that I am not biting off more than I can chew on the installation.

Yeah, I'm a bit ticked that auto up, maps and power rear window aren't standard.

No regrets at all. I'll add a tranny cooler when I see evidence that I need one. I don't do a lot of towing so it probably won't ever be a big deal.

Don't sweat the cooler so much, it doesn't have to be over $500 to be effective. Think salvage parts. I was dumb and spent about $650 for all the BS new because I needed it fast.

I've had 5 Tundras since 2013. Now in a 2020 w/o the trans cooler. I tow a couple times a year. 2500lb cars + 1500lb trailer. Never had any trans cooling problems with any of my Tundras including my current w/o the cooler. If I start towing heavier and more often I will install one.

2021 CM 4X2 is my first truck, and did read up a lot about issues/problems/whatevers....
the only thing? I wish mine was a 4x4, just because I want it. But....

All the other mods? I wondered out loud to @memario1214 why I even buy this truck, and he said:
"So you can be different to all the other Tundras out there."

And so the mod journey goes on.....

Nope, just get the truck you are happy with, color and features and all.
Don't sweat about the mods, they are and will come. LED headlights, LED rear signal lights, rock lights, fog lights, steps, bed liners, the list goes on for thousands of miles to mention...
    It's a Tundra-former after all!!

(alright, sorry, work got better of me so I am losing it a bit....

I drove a pretty much brand new 2021 SR5 4x4 access cab for a couple hundred miles. Suspension seems to be softer than the suspension on my exact same 2017 truck.

I drive a 2019 with a big grin. A few upgrades and it’s perfect. (Trans cooler, better head unit, level kit, tires)

I like it more each day.

I would consider adding a cooler if I planned to own the truck after 100k miles or so. But I won't.

But then I also probably wouldn't pull the trailer you are considering with a half ton.

Why? An airstream of that size is about half the rated trailer weight.
