    What is it for?

I am looking at a new truck in 2-3 years. Unfortunately into the next generation Tundra, which I am nervous about. If the Tundra is loaded down with new technology I won't be a test mule for it, but everything else seems to be a crapshoot. The other day I was pulling out of my gym, I saw an 06 or so F150 Supercrew stalled out on the road in front of the building with the owner screaming and banging on the wheel in frustration. Wish I would have had time to get video.

    Ram has electrical problems

Chevy 5.3 seems to have on-going issues over the last several years from mechanics and owners I've talked to.

    Ford turbos make me nervous.

I go back and fourth between Chevy and Ford. If Ford I'd probably do a 5.0 although I like the way the new Chevies look more. I really wish Toyota would just update the 5.7 with a few more horsepower and add a speed or two to the current tranny. I feel like if I could buy another one and be good for another 10-15 years.

I've spent the past 3-4 years on a Ford forum. Ford's turbos are great; no issues on any of their platforms..diesel or gas. But they have plenty of other issues.

My final straw with my F-150 was the dealership refusing to do a safety recall until "I experienced the problem". Only after I called them on the carpet and they read the recall details did they decide to make the repair.

I had a 18’ ford 3.5 eco boost. There have been plenty of problems that I read on the forums. Mostly on the 1st gen eco boost. Had 3 recalls before I had it a year. 10spd tranny is a hit or miss. Mine was pretty smooth but developed a crunching noise when letting off gas peddle. Not sure what that was. Traded for a 19 tundra pro.

I had a 2016 F150 with the 2.7 Eco. I'll be honest, I really liked the truck and the engine. However, the recalls and more importantly, the doors that would freeze and were unable to close and latch was the final straw. I had video of the frozen doors just bounding shut and not latching. Dealer said if he didn't see it then they couldn't do anything and wouldn't take action based upon the video - traded for the Tundra couple days later.

Among the big 3, I tend to lean towards GM but they're probably similar to Ford in terms of reliability. GM's version of the 10 speed is better than Ford's, as are their engines. But the new models have too many computers and the dealerships are having trouble resolving issues that crop up.

    A bunch
The notion that the Tundra is still 2 years away from the next gen should ease you're mind a bunch. At the stages we're seeing being tested in the real world Ford and GM would be 6 months from releasing it to the public. Combine that with how Toyota usually changes powertrain/chassis separate from the interior details the next gen Tundra should be nearly as reliable as a 2020 is. The guys buying 2020's are testing the electronics - push start and android auto/apple carplay for example - as those likely won't change much before the 2022 comes out. Also by the sounds of it its not an all new powertrain, it's one being used in a Lexus already and they're just fine tuning it to work on pickups. When you start digging into the next gen along with Toyota's history it's pretty easy to have confidence in a first year product. I would not be surprised to have teething issues, but not stuff that would leave you stranded.

The frozen locks recall was the issue that I referred to above. Such a joke. Ford even transferred the same design to the SD when they went to the all AL body a few years later. The dealership told me Ford didn't update the original F-150 recall notice to include the SD, so he wasn't able to perform any repairs until they came out with a follow-up notice (not technically a recall).

If you have a sunroof in your Ford, you've got to keep it lubed and the drains clear from garage. Otherwise it will leak.

This is not surprising due to the nature of a Ford!
