Thinking of Toyo Open Country AT III for my 2024. Going with 265/70-18 no lift. Do a lot of Highway (including commuting to work at a ski resort), worried about reviews regarding snow and ice traction...in analysis paralysis right now...HELP.

I've had a lot of different tires in my life, on a couple of different trucks. AT3 have been among the best in snow and ice. A lot of control in the bad conditions still comes down to you knowing your equipment, and slowing down when the conditions deteriorate. No tire is going to magically solve that.

won't 285/70/18 look better? This is the tire I will go with later.

Want to stay with recommended size, lots of highway miles….no mods on front end. They might rub…

Toyo AT III is a great all around All Terrain Tire. As @memario1214 mentioned no tire will be perfect in all conditions, but the Toyo will do well in most.

Tire size is always a personal decision. With the 265/70-18 (32.6") you could go with SL rated rather than the E rated and have a much lighter tire. Are you sticking with SL rated or the beefer E rated tires. I like the E rated just for the beefer puncture resistance but you give up mileage and smoother ride of the SL.

If your current set of tires is still good to go, and you’re looking for enhanced winter traction why not buy a set of dedicated winter tires?

I did that last year on our 2024 Land Cruiser, with a set of 265/70/R18 Michelin X-Ice Snow tires. I hate to be another guy saying it, but having driven both AT’s of various brands and now a set of actual snow tires in winter:

There is no comparison, snow tires are so much better it’s surprising the first time you drive on them in snow or on ice.

Going with the E rated. Cd, I hear you on the winter tires. Have 40k on stocks that came with the truck Michelin defenders..needless to say I was not impressed with them. Comfortable on high way..lots of traction issues as they wore as with any tire…but these seemed to slip in spots where they shouldn’t (wet grass, mud). So I need to replace them. Winters will be the next time….

    Gotcha.

In that case I can recommend Falken AT3W’s or AT4W’s, and the Toyo Open Country AT3. I have experience with both tires, take your pick. Currently I have Falkens on my old Tundra.

As an informal side note those two tires are very very popular in my area (Black Hills) for year round use. Between them probably 65-70% of the trucks and SUV’s in the parking lot at work are wearing one or the other.

Going with the AT3, getting the new shoes tomorrow. Excited to see how they ride, will be on the beach this weekend...we will see how they do this winter. Thanks so much for your thoughts, may have to spin the Falkens next go around!
