Amazon blackout overlays, honest opinions that will hopefully help your decision

I've seen reviews on these scattered throughout the forum, but I figured I'd put these all in one place, give my take on them, and give others opportunities to offer their honest opinions as well. This isn't me trying to convince anyone to buy anything; these are my opinions based on my assessments, and an attempt to help others determine if they want to buy.

I definitely wanted as much as possible in the cab blacked out. Here are the criteria for deciding to buy these from Amazon:
    • Show the quality, ease of installation, and issues to my tundras.com family, again, all in one place. I have no issues with dropping coin to be a guinea pig!
    • Compare my satisfaction of the purchases to the time I saved vs. tearing apart the dash, door panels, etc. and either painting with black trim paint, wrapping, or replacing with black OEM parts. I also knew that buying all of this, compared also to replacing with OEM black parts, would be much cheaper. The time factor was critical to me; my time is valuable to me, because the more time I spend modding, the less happy the ol' lady is, and you know...happy wife, happy life :D. Some people may be super time efficient and can tear their interior up quickly to where you can blackout without overlays, but I'm slow as molasses in that regard:rofl:.
    • Being able to return to the factory trim (as you'll see, for MOST of the parts).
    • Coverage: I'm fairly OCD, so I wanted to see, and ultimately share, how much these overlays cover factory trim.
The last bullet is easy...the sellers do a GREAT job in not showing where you can see the factory trim in the listing pics. With EVERY one of these, you can still see factory trim. I imagine that's the case with most aftermarket overlays.

Finally, even though it's hot as hell here in SC, I still took the step of heating up the adhesive with a heat gun on a lower setting, since all the listings recommended it (though probably more appropriate for when you're installing in cold weather), for better (hopefully longer-term) adhesion.

    Without further ado...
DISCLAIMER...I know my truck is dusty as hell and needs a detail! :annoyed:

Here's the wide shot of everything installed in the dash. The only thing left is the silver trim around my Phoenix HU, which I plan on buying in the future one of the new models that come with matte black trim:

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B3DKSXGH?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
These was easy, though there are coverage issues around the edges where you can see the silver OEM trim, and the thickness of the overlay does cause the buttons to be recessed:

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09KXZ741X?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
These were a little trickier since I have the AJT vent rings. It'll clear the AJT 4x4 knob, but not the vent rings. So I shaved the back of the AJT vent rings and mounted them flush on top of the overlay. Regarding coverage, there are silver exposed areas at the outer edges (the passenger side is more pronounced, but is partially covered by the dash trim overlays below), and you can still see the chrome vent rings. I painted the chrome black. Hindsight, if I didn't shave the inside lip on the back of the AJT vent ring that covers the chrome, it probably would've indeed covered the chrome.

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09NBLFRL7?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
I was a little disappointed in these. Coverage sucked in the steering wheel well. I tapped into my inner redneck and covered those areas of exposed faux wood grain when I installed my remote starter with black vinyl tape:rofl:. But they did help cover more of the exposed trim next to the glove box from the installation of the center vent/dash overlay:

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B18N6FQ2?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
Coverage on these was ass. I eventually might replace with black factory door handles...we'll see.

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B1ZJKCKZ?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
Coverage on these were pretty good. One issue though. The adhesion of both ends of each overlay for the rear doors is horrible...you can see the separation from the trim, and the ends flop around a bit. I even tried new 3M tape on the ends, and they still kept popping off. Since I was satisfied though with the coverage to consider it a "permanent" install, I went ahead and used a black small flat head screw on both ends to secure. This is the only overlay where I wouldn't be able to return to the stock trim since I now have holes.

Overall, I'd say I'm satisfied. To me, it was still worth the time savings vs. tearing everything apart, and other than some coverage issues, they don't totally throw my OCD into chaos!

    I hope this helps.

UPDATE 8/31/22: Well I was wrong, my OCD could not take the lack of coverage on the door handle overlays, nor how the steering wheel overlay just stuck out too much and recessed the buttons. So I got a refund from Amazon...best part, I did not have to ship the overlays back, so I carefully removed them and will probably offer them out for free to someone on the forum that likes the coverage and fitment enough based on my pics above.

For the handles, I chose the AJT covers, since I have the AJT theme going on in my ride, knowing full well going into it about the "rub." Easy to install, awesome coverage, and best of all, I got a set that doesn't rub at all.

For the steering wheel, I again went with AJT. My initial choice of the Amazon ones were that they were $20 cheaper than the AJT ones, I knew I would have to take the time to pull the steering wheel apart, and I was a little skeered about dicking with the air bag. Boy was I wrong. It took me only 20 minutes to swap them out (and I'm a mechanical fucktard:rofl:), and as far as the air bag is concerned, I just made sure to disconnect the negative battery cable first, and was careful with the air bag assembly when I handled it. Again, the AJT trim is $20 more than the overlays, but IMO, well worth it.

This is great. Thank you for posting this, I’ve had the steering wheel and dash overlays in my cart for the past few weeks. After seeing the results you posted I think I will pass on these.

Funny you say that @TrdPro89, that's EXACTLY what happened with me, had them in my cart for a long time, and eventually saw value in buying them and consolidating them into one thread for review by the tundras.com family to help y'all make decisions. You're welcome sir, and thank YOU for your feedback!!

I would have wrapped the door trim. No way in hell I would put screws in it like that.

These were fine but I read where the adhesive was not that good so I put some actual 3m tape on them before installation.

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09KXZ741X?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
I installed these and also added some 3m tape. Had to take off my AJT rings. There was a slight amount of chrome showing in the vents but a Sharpie took care of that.

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B1WZYK79?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
Went with AJT replacement parts instead of using these. Buttons would have been recessed too much.

Did not need these because my SR5 already had dark trim there.

Went with Meso customs door handle covers instead. They are great. No silver showing at all.

Was a very easy install & looks OEM. Mine had black stitching vs the red in the pic.

Thank you so much for the input, and additional blackout items and links!! AWESOME! Definitely one of my goals for the thread, better product offerings / solutions.
    • I tried extra 3M tape on the ends of the rear door trim overlays, but the damn things still kept popping off. Thought about epoxy, but ultimately went with screws, which might offend some, but are fine by me.
    • Yes, the steering wheel trim overlay does cause the buttons to be recessed...thanks for that, I'll update the post to highlight that.
    • Do the Meso door handle covers offer complete coverage, or at least better coverage than the Amazon ones? I was also thinking about the AJT covers since I have most of their stuff, but some people experienced "rubbing" when using the handle due to the tight tolerances.

On the door handles I stayed away from AJT because they rub on the sides. The Meso ones do not and I cannot see any silver.

Great feedback! I'll edit my post to describe the AJT ones as a "rub". I think you're causing me to lean towards the Meso covers...though since full-blown replacement handles that @1lowlife referenced are only $33 more, might go with them.

Surprised no one commented about the steering wheel emblem not having an overlay. I just bought one from Amazon and plan to install this weekend. So many to choose from on Amazon, so I bought the one with the most reviews that were positive

Actually I do have a steering wheel overlay...it's just not black, it's white like the exterior of my truck, for a little touch of contrast (pic is horrible and looks a little yellow/eggshell, but it's definitely nice and white in person). Perfect fit too...it's an AJT overlay before they discontinued selling them.

Sorry to hear that, I hope that it at least covers all the factory chrome, unlike most of the stuff I bought that doesn't cover the factory silver...

Go though the checkout process though. Ends up adding almost $10 for shipping and more if you want it made quickly, but it is very unique.

    Looks good.
See that slight bit of chrome peaking through at the vents. I used a black Sharpie to tone that down.

Now to complete the dash you got to go after those rings around the 4x4 and climate knobs.

Thanks man! I still need to somehow fix my 2 AJT vents . Maybe sand them down to make them flat. For now, i'll just use the sharpie.

That’s what I did…on the backside of the AJT vent rings, you’ll see in the pics above I shaved mine flat, then used some double sided tape to stick them to the blackout overlay.
