I have around 69 oil changes on my 04’ first gen. I changed the oil on it on Monday. Today was the first oil and filter change I’ve done on my 21’. I bought it lightly used coming off a lease and have put 5000miles on it since I bought it. I was using the last of the nice warmer days to give it a go.

I could not get the canister drain to come loose. I had to remove the canister spilling oil everywhere…then I put a filter wrench on it…then put a 3/8’s drive through the 1/2 drive filter wrench…put a 21mm wrench on the filter wrench, held it all together and put the beans to it. Nothing….it was a pretty big socket wrench so It should have been plenty of leverage. Then I tried a vice but I was at the point where I thought the canister would break before the drain plug came loose. I’m 50 miles from a dealership so I gave up and put it all back together. Kind of a bummer, I either need to always change it without draining the canister which I know a lot of guys do, and probably the dealerships…buy a new canister or have to get the next change at a dealership. This was the trucks 2nd oil change…the dealership I got it from said they changed it when I bought it at around 7500miles. I’m a state away so there is no point in complaining about it to them.

My 04’ after doing pretty good for a lot of years has now decided she is gonna rust apart as fast as she can….I decided to throw a few cans of fluid film underneath the 21’ which has no rust as of yet anywhere but with no lift I think I need to keep working at it a little.

Anyway…5000 trouble free miles on the 21’ so far. The 04’ has been a great great truck. Hope to get 60 something oil changes on the 21’ too!

60 x 5000 carry the Y :monocle: damn that’s a lot of miles! It would be awesome if my truck could make it to that.

I’m not far behind on my 2000. May never get there at the rate I drive it though. Not sure why the dealerships overtighten the filter cartridge holder on these 5.7’s. It has an O ring for God’s sake!!

That's probably a result of a Toyota tech without pride in their work. Toyotacare at it's finest.

I'd buy a whole new canister/drain setup so you don't have to deal with that mess. Hopefully it's not too pricey, but will pay itself off in the long run.

Here is the 04’ when I washed and waxed it up when it hit 200,000 miles…around 5 years ago. It will hit 300,000 miles next year. I’m trying to put as many miles on it as I can before it gives up the ghost. It had a rough year due to a incompetent mechanic…it spent about 2 months in the shop…which is why I finally broke down and bought it’s replacement. It has never left me on the side of the road…never gotten it stuck.

Nice, I had a 2000, 1st production year. Bought it in May 2000 and was my first purchased vehicle. Owned it for 20 years and got it to 280k miles. It could ran for 100k more but I didn’t want to invest time into it. Ended up buying a 20, then 21 Tundra.

I sold the 2000 for 3k within 2 hours of posting it online.

Try an extension and light touch on an impact gun or a breaker and a couple hammer taps on the drain cap next time. I go through this every time we have either of our toyotas using that filter housing assembly serviced at a dealer.

Good news is that if you DIY and follow the torque specs, it comes apart very easily.
