I had a very bad experience with my 2016 Tacoma when the plastic oil filter housing broke during and oil change. I went to buy an aluminum one for my new Tundra and was told by the Toyota dealer that they have one for the 6 cylinder Tacoma but not for the 5.7 liter Tundra. One online dealer told me that the 15620-31060 would fit the Tundra but the dealer says no.

If Toyota, or any other reputable third party makes a good metal oil filter housing cap, would someone please give me the part number or a link to buy one. I don't want to go through what I did with that Tacoma again!

    Thank you.

There are two tabs that hold it in you have to bend the tabs to take it out to put into the metal one then bend the tabs down to hold it in place. I broke one of the tabs while they were changing my oil a couple years back and just by luck parts was open and had the metal housing in stock so I had to take the short one out and replace with the long one in the plastic. Patients and gentleness when messing with the prongs.

I went back to the OE plastic one when the aftermarket aluminum housing started to leak. Chances are you'll be better off with an OEM part but now I figure if it ain't broke don't bother fixing it. Still have to clean a bunch of oil off the top of my skid plate :)

I put the venzas metal one on my tundra and will put another on the sienna we just put purchased. The tundras filter is taller than the venzas and therefore you need to swap out the shorter support for the longer one. It's very simple. You'll need a flat head screwdriver. It took me less than 5 minutes to do. I highly recommend this swap. It will save you headaches down the road.

Edit: Over a 100k miles with aluminum housing and no problems or leaks.

Also have the Venda aluminum oil filter housing installed. Truck has 20,000 miles on it with the housing and performs flawlessly. Would do this swap again and again.

Then the answer to your original question is "No. There is no metal housing made specifically for the Tundra." The filter tube swap is really simple, and commonly done though. To boost your confidence on it, I would suggest you stop by a dealership's part counter and ask to see a filter housing for your truck. You can look inside of a clean new one and see just how it would pop out and transfer to the metal one that has a short filter tube.

I didn't feel like messing with an oily one, and was worried I'd break a tab, so I bought a spare when I was installing my Jowett Performance replacement.

The main housings are all the same weather it’s plastic or aluminum- the only difference between motors 6/8 cyl is the filter element is shorter for 6cyl therefore as already mentioned you will just have to swap the LONGER center shaft out of your plastic junk and put it in the new aluminum housing to match your tundras longer element- it’s by NO means a hack job- 1000’s of fellow tundra owners have done this with NO ISSUES- including myself on both of my Toyota’s

only way it will leak is if you install the 2- seal rings INCORRECTLY - nothing to do with the element shaft you are swapping over

Just swapped over to the metal one. Get oem and you won’t have any issues.

There was a nice video of how to swap the guts with the longer one that comes with the truck.

Is the video a sticky or hidden somewhere in one of the threads?

If you can change the oil in these trucks, you can swap the inlet tube. It takes 10 seconds

You guys convinced me. Ordered the aluminum housing last night. I'll be super careful when I remove the filter support cylinder. As a side note, I went ahead and spent one of my two "free" oil changes at the dealer yesterday. Truck had 657 miles on it. Figured I'd do this to ensure I'd get the metal filings from the machining work out of there early!

Curious to how many metal filings were actually there? Enough to clog the filter and prevent it from filtering oil?

Don’t forget to order the Fumoto valve drain plug and tubing and the MotivX wrench set, which itself comes with tubing to drain the housing before removing it. Can do an oil change with no mess whatsoever. That’s possible anyway but tough to do and tougher in these trucks it seems

    Thanks for reminding me that
Not enough to clog it, but when I changed mine at about 500, yes shavings were present. Not a good thing!

Sadly, they all have these to a noticeable and regrettable amount of metal in the filter. 2010 Avalon and 2019 tundra. Secondly, Toyota hack technicians do not know how to do an oil change. An o ring, not a compression gasket, seals the large canister. A spring and notches keep it from unscrewing. The square key plug has a well designed seal and hence low torque also. And if the dammed thing falls out, adequate check valves back it up. Look, see, and learn. And best do your own oil changes to get it right. Next new Toyota of mine will get 100, 500 and then every 5000 oil changes and I will never let a dealer change it unless he gives a blood oath he’ll do it right. An excellent design in the hands of the untrained and unsupervised becomes an abortion. and I am well experienced and well trained to know that of which I speak. And think WTF they’re doing to your pan drain plug. And if they can’t do a simple oil change…

I actually broke mine on my 2013. The filter was tight as hell for some reason. One of the tabs broke off. When it broke, it actually put a hole in the housing. I have a picture of it somewhere.

Same here, I think the issues with the plastic cap arise from them being torqued on too tight.

I've heard stories of people using the filter drain plug to torque them back on too.
