Hey guys I have a question, on my 2017 toyota tundra limited 70k miles. So I took it to the dealership where I bought it and they diagnosed it with a bad alternator pulley. So I took it home and checked the pulley and it is making a small noise when I spin it. The dealership is trying to charge me $900 plus tax for a new alternator, but they sell a pulley for the alternator for just $50. They say they can't change only the pulley that it has to be the whole thing. Has anyone else had a similar situation and solution? Would i be able to only change the alternator pulley if I do it myself?

You might be able to change out the alternator pulley by itself, but what if its actually the output shaft/bearing on the alternator that is bad? That being said, if the cost is an issue, a re-manufactured alternator from Auto Zone is only about $170.00. The only way to know for sure if the alternator is toast vs. just the pulley, is to pull the alternator, and thoroughly examine it. At that point, it should be quite easy to tell if only the pulley needs replacement. Damn, is that $900.00 quote from Toyota for just the part??

Not really sure on all that , but when I took it they just told me the bearing pulley is making a humming noise. Money isn't the issue I just don't want to get ripped off because I know dealerships sometimes rip people off. Like why charge me $900 when you could just charge me $50 plus labor for the bearing itself The price was for labor and part. It would have been like 1k after taxes.

Usually you don't service alternators, that can be done but 99% of the time you just throw it out and buy a new one. That combined with dealerships always charging 3x what anyone else would, and they'll use an alternator straight from Toyota is why they're charging you a shit load. If you went anywhere else you'd end up with a brand new alternator and probably be $400 total including labor.

I am by no means a penny pincher, but if my dealership quoted me $900.00, I'd just replace the damned thing myself for less than $200.00 Shit, scratch that. I would replace it with a high output 240 amp alternator for $400.00! I have a lot of electric accessories in/on my truck.

Thank you so much for your help! But I even called the parts department and asked them how much their alternator was and it was around 300 and I went on a toyots website and found it even cheaper for about $230 which is about $700 dollar in labor which is outrageous

Thats what I'm saying i would do the same thing in just thinking of options on what I can do. Like its outrages the part on a toyota website is about $250 dollars and they are trying to charge me more than $700 dollars in labor. This is the messaged picture link they had sent me
