While cutting firewood, I pulled a huge fir in 4wd lo. I tried to reverse but trans would not engage. After moving the shift lever thru the gears it engaged. Shifts normally. Is this normal?

All I can say is when the trans went out in my 2010, it did something like this. But it also shifted hard and other gears would hesitate to engage. I also towed about 3k lbs 16 hours with it acting up and it made it after I had these symptoms and before it was replaced.

How many miles do you have? When was the last time you changed the fluid? Drain and fill? I’d start with checking the level and color of the fluid.
