My check engine light came on and it is the secondary air injection system failure. I got quoted about $3200 to fix the issue. Now this is where I am having trouble and would love some input.

I have no problem paying to fix the issue but it is my understanding that by replacing the parts I won’t be fixing the issue, the issue being a design flaw on the 5.7 in those year models. And I would be 10 kinda of sick to pay the money to fix something then a few years down the road pay to fix the same issue again. So here are the options I am looking at.

    1-Pay to fix the truck
    2-Get the bypass kit
3-Get the bypass kit and trade it in on a 2013+ so that I don’t have to worry about this issue coming up again.

    My truck is a 2008 Crewmax 4wd, 97,000 miles, 5.7

    1. You already mentioned the hazards with this choice.
    2. The bypass kit will only resolve the issue if the valves are stuck closed (not sure if this is the exact component you are having issue with). If the motors are taking a shit on you, the bypass kit should be your final stop to a resolution (check with the fella that makes the kit though).
    3. The newer one don't have the issue? I guess that's a good thing. I didn't know that that it was actually fixed, but I guess I haven't been reading of any issue on the 3rd Gen...

I just had the same issue about a month ago. I bit the bullet and paid to get it fixed. I’m hoping the new updated design keeps it from happening agin. My dealership charged me $2100.00
