Advice needed. 2010 Tundra facing major repair bill

    Hi there!

    I have a 2010 4x4 dbl cab base, with 215k miles.

    Last year, I had issues with AIP and installed the bypass kit to pass emissions.
    Almost 1 year to the day, emissions time comes again, and I get another code, so I ordered the pressure sensor harness to remedy.
    Before that package arrived, my truck died on the highway (during rush hour, no less).

    That was a week ago. The truck has been in the shop for 8 days now. The ECM was toast, which I can verify, as none of my scanners would even connect. I agreed to replace the ECM.

    Now, they want to replace the AIP and the driver computer. We are talking $4500 worth of work in total on a truck that may be worth $10k.

    The mechanic is hesitant to recommend letting me plug the bypass back in and try to drive away. He thinks it will fail again. I worry that if I do this, they will probably void any warranty the ECM has since they know there is a bypass kit involved.

    What would you do? R

    What do you supposed you'd get in trade for a truck with this issue?

    I'd love to! Problem is, I don't think I'd get jack squat for it as-is. Looking at pumps on Amazon for $149 each and the guy that posted the how-to says it was 2 hours of labor to do it in his garage.

    Hold the Line! If you are not holding the line, abandon your ship. Destruction is inevitable without more to hold the line!
    I would buy a used ECM, install it, have the truck towed to the dealership for programming. Then install the pump.

    Or

    Trade it in.

    You will likely loose 5-6k on the trade-in value, if traded AS-IS.

    Thanks. I already agreed to the ECM, and they installed it. That was when they "detected" a short coming from the air pump. They disconnected it, and it will only run in LMP mode. I guess I could figure out the parts I need and try to replace the pumps and valves myself. And then trade it.

    Thanks. Unfortunately at 215k, nothing is covered. I tried this last year at 180k.

    I would try and do the bypass drive to a different dealer and act like nothing is wrong/play stupid.

    All most dealers do is start up the vehicle anyway.

    I would send your ECM out to rebuild. I have done this several times with great results. They have a warranty, and it is a quick turnaround.

    ECMs go bad.

    Where were you last week? Truck died on my crappy commute... I would have towed it to my house if wasn't going to cost so much. Toyota dealer was nearby. I regret that choice.

    Looks like I'll try the bypass route and unloading it. Ugh.

    Last week if you're in CO, I would have towed you home.

    So I know Jeep and Dodge ECMs, once you burn the VIN number, you can't use it on another vehicle. I would think Toyota would be similar.

    Perhaps, I am not sure, never had to replace one. The ECM rebuild sounds like a good option. Then just use the bypass kit he currently has installed or buy the parts to replace the AIP himself.

    My father replaced the ECM on his Ford f350 6.0. He just bought a new one and drove the truck in limp mode the 5 miles to the dealership, to have them "reprogram it". All in all the new ECM was $300 and the reprogram fee, the ford dealership charged was like $125. They originally quoted something similar to $2800 to replace it. So a significant savings by doing it yourself.

    Yep, exactly what I am suggesting. Once the dealership burns the program, it stays with the vehicle. Private shops can go as long as they have a Snap On or similar high end scanner/multi tool.

    Great way to save some hard earned cash. The only time I go to dealerships is when I am under warranty. After that, I have my own shops or just do it myself depending on skill level.

    You seem pretty crafty. Im sure you will figure out something. Im a poor guy, so I would be trying to figure out how to repair it and keep it.
