    May need some advice.

I am thinking of buying either used Tundra or used Ford Raptor. I have been a ford guy my whole life, but my last couple fords have had serious design issues.

I am from Indianapolis, this will mainly be for work. I do need 4x4 almost daily. And I expect to put around 40k miles on it a year. I could do a taco or a new ranger but I want the room and reliability.

    I am thinking of going 20-25k $.

Are you talking about the 1st gen raptor or 2nd gen? You might want to look into reliability of that 2nd gen eco boost. I would expect the tundra would be a lot cheaper maintenance wise to own than the ford. But that raptor may retain its value a bit more

2012 raptor with 40k miles. About Same price as a 2012 Tundras with 40k miles in my area. Under 25k$.

I expect to old raptors to increase in value. But need much more in maintenance.

After a lifetime of GMC's I bought a yoda. I love it. No major problems, even the minor ones are minor.

I'd take a 2012 Raptor over a 2012 Tundra, but not if I had to drive 40k miles per year. You'd be over 100k miles in less than 2 years. Imagine trying to sell the Raptor in a few years vs the Tundra when you have over 150k miles on it. How many Raptors do you see that even have that many miles on it? I see less than 10 for sale nationwide on Autotrader with over 150k miles, with the highest being 170k miles.

    Welcome from Georgia.

I have purchased 3 used SR5 Toyota trucks, and I still drive 2 of them. I sold the '96 V6 T100 after buying an '02 V8 Tundra, it is my dedicated work truck. Two years ago I purchased an '07 Tundra with the 5.7L when it already had 270,000 miles on it, it will soon have 290,000. The 5.7L has the most power with the least maintenance (no timing belt to mess with), look for an SR5 with the 5.7L - that's my recommendation.

    As for the Ford...

Thanks for the recommendation about the 5.7s.

After thinking about it as well as looking at the maintence. I am really against the Raptor. Allot of problems with them. I also realized while I am a decent mechanic, I simply don't have time to do major work that most fords require. I generally work 6 days a week.

In Indiana, tacos sells for more than Tundras used. I did see a low mileage ford explorer sport trac 4.6 3v 4wd with 50k miles. I also realize I would have to spend 3-4k on the engine just to make it reliable.

    Welcome!

I think your general position is what had pushed me to toyotas years back.

I would love to own/operate a domestic vehicle, BUT until the big three ( .. well two .. well .. ugh) until they start building their products with the devotion to longevity that toyota does, im not budging.

I get slack for driving a Japanese truck, even while im picking my buddy up cause his 'merica rig' is in the shop

Buy a tundra. Be a slave to free time, not truck repairs

A friend gave me crap about my truck. Said "I thought you liked American trucks!" I just responded that a Tundra built in Texas is more American than anything built in Mexico. Truth be told, IDGAF where it's built; I was downsizing to a single vehicle. Reliability was the number one priority. The Tundra wins in the reliability category agains all others. Plain and simple.

In japan there’s no tundra or Tacoma. The truck we have here is build here and only sold here. I don’t know how Americans they want.
