This is my first Tundra and I’ve had for 30k miles. It is hot here currently (106-108) the AC will only blow hot when idled more than a few minutes. Is this normal or do I have a problem? It does just fine when moving.

also the trucks temps stay in the normal range, no problems there

Maybe you don't have enough freon?

just watched some videos and it looks pretty easy. My son had football practice in this heat and I actually cooled off turning the truck off and rolling the windows down. I assume it can’t be too low since it works when driving, but something is definitely not right…

There's more to it. Sounds like you have an airflow problem over and through the condenser. Bunch of dead bugs, dented fins maybe behind the grill blocking the airflow? You could also have an issue with the fan clutch causing the fan to not pull enough air through the condenser. It's cooling rolling because of increase in airflow through the condenser fins.

I just hand washed it last week, no bug build up, as I sprayed it all out. (Wasn’t that bad really) it did it last year too when my wife drove it. She complained after I told her this was the truck to keep for my son. Not sure how to check the clutch? The fins are good. This truck was old man’s, it’s a 14 and just now hit 102k. Had 69k when I bought it 21

Before you go just throwing freon into it, you probably need to check your fan clutch. Since these trucks do not have electric fans, if the fan clutch gets weak, it will not pull enough air through the condenser at slow speeds which will cause the compressor to kick out.

I have a 2017. My mechanic buddy just replaced my freon. He vacuumed out the old and replaced with new. He said he put about 30% more in than he took out. AC is much colder now.

Fam clutch felt really solid. Didn’t have any coil cleaner but soaked it with simple green and hosed it out. Not many bugs BUT a very surprising amount of dirt and sand left on the ground. Back at football practice today, outside is 104, plus I’m facing the sun. Ac bent temps are staying at 54-55 deg, so a metric ton better than it was. Do you sees a need for the coil cleaner or are these temp where it should be? It’s plenty comfortable but if it could be better it pretty cheap…..

also I checked the Freon and it showed to be in range so I didn’t add anything.

Just keep it rinsed out with the simple green and water a few times per year and you should be fine. Do not use high pressure as it can bend the fins. Same for your house too.

Ended up making it about 40min, then it started blowing warm, the vent temp got up to 92 before I just turned it off and rolled the windows down. I have an extended warranty and it needs a few other things done so Im just gonna drop it off this week and let them deal with it.
