Abs self check on 01?

Trying to diagnose a possible normal or abnormal sound on my 01 limited access cab.

I’m dealing with a single sound that is loud enough to notice in a closed cabin. It’s hard to describe but sometimes it almost sounds more of a twang like a spring went off under tension or like a giant rubber band?

only happens when I first drive from park and pull off moving the first couple feet or so. Doesn’t happen afterwards, either at a stop or otherwise. Replicable every single time. Doesn’t happen when shifting the lever. It being warmed up or cold doesn’t seem to alter it happening.

from looking online I’m thinking it could be the abs self test as others have reported the same, but it seems to be mostly new gen tundras commenting and not the first gens. I do see it mentioned in the owners manual but it states it should make a noise upon engine start and no mention of it moving a certain distance, which makes me think it might be something else like maybe a bad u joint?

just testing the waters and seeing if others have the same thing or if I should get it looked at

 

Parking brake sticking?

Does it do it if you use the parking brake, leave the truck in neutral and then move to drive to take off?

 

Yeah usually happens regardless of whether the parking break was left on or off before moving. In terms of trying what you mentioned with neutral, I'll try it out when I drive home tonight.

Maybe check the carrier bearing and see if the rubber is torn too.
