I suppose the likelihood of someone in South Carolina or a neighboring state having a low mileage one of these stashed in the back of their garage and going for a song is fairly slim?

Not a happy bunny at the moment, 244k has taken its toll on my transmission and I either need to get it refurbed or drop another in there.
My 'old school type' transmission man says that it's losing pressure and needs an overhaul at $2.5 -3K. His recommendation was to find a low mileage one from a junk yard rather than rebuild the high miler. He was quite surprised at how many miles it had done before starting to play up, he did one last year that had 150k on it and wouldn't expect that model to go much beyond 150k before starting to play up, which surprised me.
Trouble is there doesn't appear to be too many of these available, none of them have fewer than 100k miles on them and they don't appear to go for less than $2k. By the time I've stumped up for installation the differences between refurb and replacement are negligible.

Any salient thoughts from the forum collective? :monocle:

LKQ was where my mechanic sent me to look. I only had a quick look but it seemed the only way to search for a part to fit was by entering my truck's details. The results are all related to 2013 donors, did you find a way to hunt down a specific part without checking every possible combination of vehicle the transmission was fitted to or did you call them and they did the leg work? Otherwise they only show four from 2013 Tundras, starting at $2,400 on a part with over 150k on it...

OP, if by chance you go rebuilt local, do your homework on who the torque converter comes from and pay more for a good one as it will make or break your investment.

In short, local rebuilders open them and replace the obvious, and send it. Remanufactured, means it meets OEM spec which is what you want if coupled to your rebuilt trans.

Being a newb, does any other country have low mileage Tundras? On another forum I'm on, people buy engines, trans, etc with 50 to 70k mi from other countries for cheap. They are like new compared to here...

Funny you should say that, when I rocked up at this mechanics place the first time with a reluctant Sport Trac and a torque converter that I'd sourced he said it was (not so) cheap rubbish, from an auto store that shall remain nameless, which I had already suspected from internet trawlings. He said send it back and he'd source a decent one, which turned out cheaper than the crap. Like I said earlier, he's old school and does a good job for a reasonable rate.
You might find a grey import here or there internationally but Tundras are basically produced for Canada, the US and I think Mexico.

Clenched my teeth and told my mechanic to refurb my box rather than taking a punt in a replacement that might be hit or miss.

And I might have just bought a Nissan Frontier Nismo off him for crazy cheap money….
