This morning I started getting calls about the facility I work at, Clear Springs Ranch for Colorado Springs Utilities.

Two killed in industrial accident near Ray Nixon Power Plant

    http://www.fox21news.com/news/local...ccident-near-ray-nixon-power-plant/1171713430

    (Via FOX21 News)

Two young men in their 20’s got a boom from their core drilling machine into some high voltage electricity. They were electrocuted and then burned.
This did consume a good portion of my day even though I’m on vacation. Lots of questions are going through my mind on this one.

As some of you know, I did linework for a while. I always tested anything I was working on or knew my surroundings. Still, people got hurt and even one young man died climbing.

Throughout my career, I have been on site or close by to a couple electrocutions, one man was burned alive and begged us to run and get a gun to kill him (that was an awesome experience), and some loss of limbs.

All these incidents could have been avoided except the man that burnt alive. He drove over a manhole cover with hot steel on the back, and went through the manhole. Law of Inertia kicked in real quick.

All I’m going to say is take it easy at work, be smart, double check, trust knowone but yourself with personal safety. There is nothing worth dying for in an industrial job. OSHA rules were written in blood.

Have quite a few friends that are lineman, one nearly died doing highline work from a helicopter a few years back, glad he’s still with us. We also had a lineman die a few years ago in a freak accident just south of my hometown.

Don’t know how these guys do it, as 3 phase alone scares the living shit out of me, but much respect to those who do.

About 15 years ago a contractor with a boom truck got into our 230KV line. Not sure how someone didn’t die on that one. They also didn’t fess up to it either.

In my experiences, the accidents are either the new person or the complacent experienced person a few months from retirement.

Damn that's a shame, sounds like a loss of situational awareness cost them everything. Worst I play with is 12kV but it pays to be careful no matter what power you are working near.

Man, this is terrible to hear about!

You're absolutely right, Chris, Always follow OSHA/Safety rules, common sense and be aware of your surroundings.

I'm no stranger to incidents like this. Too many family members and friends have either had close calls or been at the mercy of whatever power/tech they were working with at the time (myself included). It's definitely a chore to stay aware, but in cases like this, you can't afford to slack off.

Very sad. Very sorry for all those affected.

My Industrial workplace Safety culture preaches to "know and be aware of your surroundings". Evidently they were were not aware of the dangers.

With training and safe work practice you can become more comfortable with the work but being wary is always a good idea. Like CoTJ said, test test and test some more. I work with sedate things compared to him.

Very sad news. High voltage and current is serious stuff. We calibrate AC/DC instruments up to 120KV. AC can be very dicey at best. Only a few of us are trained here at the lab. We have strict safety procedures that we HAVE to follow. We verify lots of Hot Sticks and lineman gloves. One tiny hole in a glove can be an endgame...

I’ve been in the industry a long time. Safety is number 1 in my book. Unfortunately not everyone has the same attitude. Not on an individual level and not on the COMPANY level.
Furthermore, most companies utilize contractors for many reasons and most contractors are not usually trained to the level they need to be when it comes to safety. A lot of these guys that bore, do fencing etc don’t work around HV daily and aren’t aware of the dangers. A responsible company always sends a trained and qualified employee to watch the work being done.
With that said, I understand the inherent danger of my job and realize everyday may be my last no matter how safe I am.
Here is my playground for the day.

Ha well when you’re farming, you’re mainly dealing with 480 3-phase on irrigation pivots.

The way you worded it, made it sound like lower voltages scared you. :D

I had a 480V arc flash in a tight spot. That was no Bueno.
