I have a 2011 Trd crewmax. Truck has old 4-pin flat connector for trailer lights. My trailer has a 7 pin with electric winch wired to the trailer light plug. I have found some adapters that plug into 4 pin but have wires hanging off to be wired I'm assuming for things like that powered winch. I want to install a plug on back of truck with 7pin round and 4 pin connector that I can power that winch with. Suggestions?

First things, first. I’m guessing that the winch draws a significant amount of current. That said, running the winch off the light circuit is a sub-optimal solution.

You should consider wiring the winch directly to the trailer battery, if it has one. Make sure you use a thick enough gauge wire for both leads to support the maximum current draw of the winch.

If no battery on board the trailer, then wire the winch to the Aux +12V charging circuit of the 7 way connector in the trailer. There are plenty of diagrams online showing the 7 way plug layout. If your trailer is fairly modern, it should be using standardized wiring color.

In either case, you will need to install a properly wired 7 way connector, not one running off a 4 pin adapter. The website etrailer.com has a lot of tips on wiring. I’m guessing it’s not going to be simple.

E trailer had a few options that supposedly plug directly into wiring harness. Just didnt know if they would power the winch. No battery on trailer. Small winch for 2500 lbs. Boat trailer.
