I had rattling noise that came from the front of the engine on cold start. It continued to get worse over time until it got pretty bad. Here it is:

Turns out to be loose cam chains (both lower chains) caused by stuck tensioners. I replaced all 4 chains, tensioners and guides and its perfect now. Horrible job to do but this video might help you through the gotchas.

That’s impressive work! I’ve done a lot of wrenching over the years, but this one might be above my level.

    Pretty things
I hope to never be into my 3uz that deep, but good on ya!

Was expecting to hear the somewhat startling rattle Ive got for about 2 seconds upon some cold starts (20-30 deg F), but that coming and going, well after start up is definitely not what I am experiencing.

Kinda seems like all of these fancy vvt systems have a tendency to clatter a bit until oil pressure comes up.

Glad you got all fixed up

My Tundra is fairly quiet at 266k miles, but 2014 Camry at 172k?.... definite rattle at startup and first start after an oil change hurts me in my soul

Yeah I have that rattle a little bit on Georgia Cold mornings...you explained it really well.

Btw one suggestion to the video you recommended is to put it in the comments section as well. the 2nd video you mentioned is here.

oh I also forgot to mention.. after watching the video this is procedure as hard than doing the timing belt replacement on the Toyo 4.7l v8 2uz-fe engine. Make sure you follow the procedure and you should be okay.

BTW @Danssmallengine do you happen to have the toyota tech instructions on this? it would be great if you can post it so we all can benefit.

    Thanks

PS. Looks like I found the instructions to do this online via this link just in case you need it. https://www.tundratalk.net/threads/2008-5-7-timing-chain-tensioner-replacement.762018/page-3
