My (new to me) 2017 Limited 5.7 engine has been a little hard to start the first start of the day. the starter turns over 10-15-seconds before starting .... almost as if not getting gas soon enough. After 1st start of day does fine rest of day. Has anyone saw this before? what was culprit? Only owned this truck two weeks and trying to get bugs out. has 155k on engine

Flex fuel model? It’s actually getting too much gas. Search alcohol density on here and you’ll get up to speed.

To add a third opinion - flex fuel fuel alcohol reading could be off. Yep, what those guys said. Just noting that it is common enough that they aren't pulling a random solution out of the hat. I personally don't have to deal with it on my vehicles, but it pops up often on the forum. Luckily, it is a simple reset that you sometime need to pay the dealer for. Better than throwing a few thousand dollars in parts and a week or two at the shop.

I'm not bagging on anyone's choice for a scanner, just trying to understand the differences but what will the Xtool D7 do that the Launch Creader Elite won't do at 1/3 the price ?
Bear in mind, I'm going to be buying a scanner almost purely for the fuel alcohol reset function.

When I bought my scanner the creader elite wasn't available. I think that's a newer model in the launch lineup, but not positive on that. I'm also not positive that the creader elite will perform the alcohol density reset. I think @bmf4069 bought one at one point and returned it if I recall? Or maybe it was @texasrho83? Maybe one of them can chime in and confirm or deny this?

    It'll do it.

    Here are the steps:

Diagnostic, 16pin, System, powertrain, ecmect, read data stream, check these boxes - alcohol density estimate, long FT #1 & #2, click ok and it’ll split screen all three

Was there any reason you returned your creader elite? I think I recall you saying it wasn't as user friendly or something to that effect? Or was it for functions that it couldn't perform?

I didn't care for the small display (semi-fat fingers need a stylus) and the inability to do key programming among other stuff.

i'm not crazy about the small display either for my 60 year old eyes, but for a tad over $100 vs $300ish for the D7 and considering all I'm really interested in is the alcohol reset then it seems like the one for me. And the ability to disable the seatbelt chime is a bonus and if I'm not mistaken this is the only one beside Techstream that will do that.

    Thanks guys!~

Let me know for sure about that chime removal because I'm not sure it does it. The D7 doesn't

I tried the Launch Creader Elite from Amazon and it was junk. First one died the moment I plugged it in and then the second one took so long scanning my truck battery nearly died. Tried it on the house WiFi, it wouldn’t connect to my hotspot. It was junk and ended up sending it back. Like you, all I wanna do is reset the alcohol and that’s it.

Reset mine today with TopDon 900. Whole process including updates, initial setup, and resetting alcohol % took maybe 30 minutes.

The last 2 times I filled up at Costco the next morning (it was cold), I had a long start. I always run 87 octane, but started adding octane booster from Lucas. Doesn't have long start anymore.

Seems counterintuitive since 87 ignites easier than higher octane gasoline. We always use 87 to start the race boat that has 116 in the tank.

Cranked truck today in 30 degree weather. No blue smoke. My power is back. Replacing PCV fixed it.

Received my Launch Creader Elite T today. Ran the updates and plugged it in, took a few minutes to poke around then read my alcohol density estimate at 85.1%.
Reset the learning and rechecked the estimate, this time 0%.

My truck's been sitting outside and hasn't been started in a couple days so it was good and cold. Hit the starter and it VROOMED to life with gusto I haven't seen from it in a while.

We'll see how it does long term and what my mileage changes since I reset that too.

Forgot to disable the seatbelt chime I was so excited by the alcohol density fix. I'll do that later and update this thread.

I can see what @texasrho83 means about returning his because he has big fingers and this is a small screen. I don't have particularly large/thick hands but I often mistyped when entering things like my email address. So I can see the utility in a bigger version but on the other hand this fits nicely into the glovebox.

ETA: can confirm that I successfully disabled the seatbelt chime. You cannot, however, disable the key in ignition chime but you can alter the volume.

Your reasoning of justifying the cheaper purchase and review makes me want to order one also. I just don’t want a DOA unit..

Very true. I don’t see the Launch Creader Elite T version. I only see the non T version. Am I missing something? There is a T version on eBay but I’m skeptical about that.

Yeah I'm not sure where @Timberline picked his up from. The ones I'm seeing on Amazon are $179 with a $35 off coupon. Which isn't a bad price for a scanner. Honestly I feel like eBay and Amazon aren't much different though. Basically store fronts for the same sellers anyhow. Amazon just has an easier return policy. If you go with an eBay model just use PayPal. They are great for protection if you get a bad deal.

I'd be surprised if your doughnut filter on your fuel pump is not plugged up. It's a bad design. If you keep this truck somewhere you will probably have the fuel tank off. They can be fixed but you can never run E85 again
