Please help me locate this noise before I go crazy. Video and pics attached.
It's behind the rear passenger seat. Video was taken at about 15mph. No real bumps, just ripples.
It was worse when my friend rode back there to take the video. That's why I was thinking the mount.
Sounds like it's on the floor above the cab mount. The mount looks fine. I tried to turn the bolt but it's tight. I attached pics of the mount.
Shock is a Bilstein and is not loose. Wheels are tight.

Have you checked for missing bolts or tools in the frame rails?

 

Tire jack or some other item in the storage panel under the seat?

 

10mm socket stock in the under-seat storage?

It actually sounds like what we deal with when the rear seatbelt in our 2020 Highlander gets stuck between the seat and door.

Doesn't sound like the body mount issue I had. Mine was a distinctive weight shift clanking going around corners until it gave way and you could feel the cab bouncing off the frame. Not pleasant and made you avoid every bump and pothole in the road.

To me it sounds like a loose interior panel shifting around. You could see if it gets louder taking corners to verify if it’s really the mount. I would assume that puts the most stress on it unless you hit a pothole.

 

I'd have your buddy start pushing on the panels while driving.

I had a similar sound because my dumb ass left a socket in the sunglass holder

I've also heard similar from stuff I've left in the center console.

But I can't peg where yours is coming from.

Yes.

Removed everything.

You can hear it if you turn hard back and forth.

I listened with a stethoscope. The noise is the loudest on the floor above the mount.

 

Maybe it's because you have an 06 Double Cab but you're body mount looks different than mine I think.

That noise is odd.

 

A loose window rail? Sounds like it is caused by the wind? Let us know if you find it? Puzzles!!!

 

I would just go ahead and replace it if the sound appears to originate from the mount. These trucks are old and the mounts will eventually need replacement anyway. Especially, if the sound is only when you hit a rough patch. I wouldn’t expect it to make noise if you’re on a smooth patch of road.

If it does fix the issue, let us know.

 

Mine has a "cup" around the nut. I don't see that on the Toyota parts site or any image online. They are the originals.

Not caused by the wind.

It's still there with brakes applied and the parking brake lightly applied.

 

^^^it just vibrated in the video like it was wind related. Does your back window come down? That’s all I have. Best of luck?

 

How do the body lines look? Does the cab trim line up with the bed trim in an even line? When my cab mount failed, I heard a very similar noise, but the tell was the body side molding not lining up with the bed molding. The cab had dropped an inch or so, and didn't line up with the bed.

Have you popped the back wall plate off to check the torque on the rear vertical slider frame?

Does it make the same noise when the rear window is rolled all the way down while driving?

Noise is the same regardless of the rear window position.

 

Did you pop the rear panel off and check back in that compartment for anything? Loose bolts, a trim piece that may be flopping around, etc?

(With the window up, of course)

Did you try torquing down the body mount in that corner 1/4 - 1/2 turn just to see if there's any difference?

 

I haven't taken the panel off yet. That's next.
I did try to turn the bolt from the top and it's tight. I can't move the nut on the bottom.

 

I'd pop that back panel off, and repeat the ride with your friend, have them see if it's louder or clearly coming from in there.

I don't go popping off body mounts much. I think I've had to do them all of once, in my '68 C10, and help a friend with his '71. It may've been different for those, but you had to hold a wrench on the bolt head inside the cab for those, then spin the nut from under. 1-person job was possible on that one, but I doubt it would be in these trucks.

 

Sounds like a loose bolt in a heavy frame. Not tinny like a window track or something bolted to the body. Like knocking on the frame lightly with a ball peen hammer. Body mount was a good suggestion in that line of thinking. What other frame mounted type things in that area do you have access to to check the bolts? Also look for shiny spots if something has started to make contact where it normally doesn't.

 

That's exactly what it sounds like.
This is just from the slightest ripples in the road. No bumps.
There's really nothing else in that area.
I probed other areas with the stethoscope and it is the loudest on the floor by the mount.
There is very little noise on the driver's side even by the mount.
Definitely worse with someone back there.

 

I would start with the mount then. All signs are pointing there.

 

Can't wait to see what the culprit ends up being...

 

I just hope I can find something. It's been cold this weekend so I'm hoping to get out there tomorrow.

 

I thought I'd update this post.
The noise is just from the slightest ripples in the road. No bumps needed.
I tried several things.
I took it for a test drive after each one and still no solution.
Looked for anything loose under truck especially along the frame.
Remove right rear wheel and brake drum. Inspected brakes.
Removed bottom bolt on shock and pulled it to the side with a bungee.
Removed bolt on the right rear mount. It was tight. Bolt and mount looked fine. Reinstalled and torqued. Tightened the other rear mount and the 2 in the middle about 1/2 turn.
Removed tools and jack under seat.
Removed spare tire.
Removed metal panel behind seats. Checked for loose parts.
Removed rear seat belt and lower trim panel. Looked for loose parts.
Sprayed lube on leaf spring bushings.
Checked front stab links.
I don't think it's anything on the front but I thought I check them anyway.
Well there you have it. I'll keep you updated.

 

Remove everything from glovebox, center console, door cubbies front and back, grab handle pockets front and back empty the sunglass holder if applicable, ... I'm trying to thing of anything else...

Check the seat belt insertion/mount points? For the meantime, go ahead and buckle the seat belts, just for the sake of holding them in one place.

 

Have you tried having a couple buddy's jump up and down on the bumper while truck is sitting still? Try to really get the rear oscillating up and down to see if the noise appears and it may be a litter easier to pinpoint without the associated tire and engine noise you get while driving.

Why can't it be a tool or piece of hardware in the cavity below the rear window?

 

Just spitballin here...

Broken exhaust hanger hitting below the cab? Try shaking the exhaust.

Anything in the door between the door card and the skin? Try shaking the door.

Nothing stored in the doors.
I removed the rear belts and lower trim panels.

Tried bouncing it. Nothing. It doesn't take a rough road for it to happen. Just going over a manhole cover will do it.
I removed the metal panel behind seats and looked in there.

Exhaust good. All hangers intact in rubber mounts. Shake does nothing.
Shook the door.
I actually put a blanket between the door and cab and held the door "closed" with a bungee leaving a 6" gap to make sure it wasn't something in the lock assembly.
