Wasn't sure where else to post this and I'm not a member of a 4runner forum but..... I noticed an antifreeze leak on my 2006 Toyota 4runner but I'm hoping it's not a huge expense to fix. I've attached pictures to help identify the spot of the leak, any insight would be appreciated 20190902_081308.jpg 20190902_081303.jpg 20190902_081233.jpg 20190902_081225.jpg

    (1) Is that Toyota antifreeze? If Dex-cool has been used (it's also red, but not the same chemistry), then that's likely your problem. Toyota engines use sealing materials that Dex-cool will eat up. Found that out the hard way.

    (2) Can't tell if that leaking bulge has a hose attached to the bottom of it. It looks like an old fashioned "freeze plug". Can you give us a hint of what the bottom of it looks like?

1.Its definitely Toyota antifreeze, and the hose runs up from the bottom of the radiator to this metal piece where it splits
    2. cant see any other hoses

Strawberry milkshake issue. Happened with my '97 runner. Thankfully happened just outside of my driveway. Thankfully nothing screwed up my transmission. Just shut it off don't run. I replaced radiator, replaced transmission fluids, completely washed out hoses out then hook new rad up. Good to go and traded it in 10k miles later for 1800 on a new taco :)

    The
The radiator isn't leaking, the hose that runs from the bottom of the radiator up to a metal piece then into what looks like the engine. It's leaking from the hose that connects to the engine.

Research the strawberry milkshake issue online and you will find it prevalent. I researched it on t4r.org

Mine needed to be. I am not a mechanic but i was told by everybody on t4r to do so... it's when antifreeze mixed with oil and can Gerry into your tranny. And fuck it up.

The "strawberry milkshake" issue is simply contamination of the coolant with transmission fluid, resulting in an emulsion. It shouldn't make anything leak...UNLESS the transmission fluid is attacking the cooling system sealing elastomers, which is a possibility.

Inspect the radiator neck and tank for any traces of emulsion, maybe even drain the coolant into a clean container. If there is no sign of emulsion in the coolant, the housing will need to be removed and resealed. If the coolant is new, you can reuse it if the container is squeaky clean, but replacement is probably safer and not that much expense. If you find emulsion, then you have a transmission cooler leaking.
