3rd gen wheels on 1st gen

Having trouble finding info, I have a 1st gen and purchased some 3rd gen wheels since they switched back to the 6 lug pattern . But the 3rd gen’s kept the 2nd gen’s studs that use the 14x1.5 lugs so my 12x1.5 lugs will not seat properly into the wheels because the holes are wider. Are there a correct set of lugs that I can use or am I just SOL?

 

pics of wheels mounted on the lugs to show the setup. What lugnuts were factory on the wheels? Is the centerbore of the wheels compatible with the centerbore on your hubs?

 

@Gta3214 I think the center bore size is also different but have not confirmed. You may be the first to really try this. Please post pictures of your findings whether it works out or not.

It seems like the proper lugnut could be created to make it work not sure if it exists though. More worried about hub bore.

 

I’m just spitballing here and it’s probably more work than worth it but here goes.

if the hub bore will work, can he not just swap his existing wheel studs to the 2nd gen wheels stubs or will that not work for some reason

 

I believe the 2nd gen studs are thicker, and the splines are different. Somewhere in my lifetime project thread there's pictures of our wheel studs removed from the truck. I'm sure you could find pictures here of 2nd gen wheel studs removed.

Course, when I get home I could always see if one of my lugnuts fits mom's sequioa, but I doubt it.

 

Isn't the offset on the 3rd gen wheels much higher (meaning more tucked in)?

 

You can always have some wheel adapters made to fix the lug spacing and center bore issues. Might be $$$ and negate whatever deal you got in those wheels.

 

I've got nothing on actually fixing your problem, but 3rd gen wheels take the million mile reliability of the 4.7 and lowers it to 100K. Just FYI

Swap wheel studs out for larger 14mm thread ones and use hub centric adapter rings?

Use the lisle stud install tool if you do.

 

Really just have to find a lugnut that's as big around as the 3rd gen one but still has the proper thread pitch in it.
@Gta3214 any chance you could try to fit it on the hub of your truck and see how much difference the hub diameter is. Of course if the wheels have a lot of positive offset like many say they do then you would need a wheel spacer anyway. Sounds like a bunch of custom stuff until a company makes a product to make these new wheels fit the older trucks. Surely some company will make something to make these fit soon enough.

 

Any resolution on this? I’m in the same boat. Hub bore appears smaller on the ‘22. Seems that the only way is wheel spacers (which I have) and fatter M12 bolts. The only problem is it would now be lug centric instead of hub centric. The wheel spacers I purchased were only hubcentric on the hub side.

 

As far as I can tell you need the "fatter" m12 lugnuts but also a custom spacer made for the proper hub diameter change. Running them lug centric probably wouldn't be a good idea.
If a company decides to make a m12 large diameter hub to m14 small diameter hub then it would work great. Not sure that anyone is going to do that though.

Any competent machine shop should be able to make you spacers that will work. But it may be somewhat pricy.

 

No, they were too much headache to make work, even with spacers you still need correct lugs. I sold them.

 

The easiest option for me was to order it online. USwheel custom adapters for $480 landed. I’m sure there are cheaper local options.

 

Holy shit that's some high dollar spacers. You must have got a killer deal on those wheels. Please let us know how it all turns out. You'll most likely be one of the first to do it.

 

The rims and tires were roll-offs with 50 test drive miles on them. I bought them from a guy that works for the dealers swapping out OEM for Chinese junk rims. 800 for the ‘22 roll offs. 500 for custom adapters.

1300 total for new rims and tires. I needed tires anyways and old steely rims were getting tired too. I’ll update with results

 

Bora will do custom adapters too. Plug in your hub sizes and desired thickness.

 

The last (2) weeks I have been focused on performing some suspension work. I replaced both outer tie-rods, lower ball joints and strut assemblies. Still have to do the RH and LH motor mounts and steering rack bushings.

I received the wheel adapters and they came with inner lugs, even though I specifically requested outer lugs. USWheelAdapters was not willing to work with me on sending the requested lugs. Perhaps Bora has better customer service.

I purchased outer lugs from autozone and they fit but they were just slightly bigger then the rim lug hole and probably would have fell off. I am now going to purchase OEM lugs to fasten the rim and should be set. I do not recommend installing ‘22 rims on a gen 1. It has been a PITA every step of the way.

 

Hopefully nothing Moog or off-brand in there, eh? Especially Moog, after all the recalls and everything. Nobody wants to be this guy or this guy or this guy or any of the other dozens of pics floating around in 1st Gen forums.

Sucks about US Wheel Adapters and their shitty service. If your order clearly says one thing and you got another, and they refuse to budge, inform them your next step is to dispute it with your credit card company. Or, if paid via PayPal, open a case for 'item not as received'. They'll likely change their tune, if not, your money will come back.

 

Ball joints were a last minute task, I picked up Autozone brand (ACDelco?) joints. Wish me luck I guess. Outer Tie-rods are Suspensia brand and strut assemblies are Monroe. Had I read the forums I would have gone with Bilstein struts.

I was planning on doing the steering rack and inner tie rods next but as it turns out the tie rods are Moog. I’ll send em back to RockAuto.

USWheel was lame and I should fight for it but I’m going to move on. It sounds like I have more important issues with my budget suspension/steering parts. I’ll have to take a trip to Toyota’s parts department. $$$

 

If you have a participating dealership anywhere near you, order the parts through https://autoparts.toyota.com for pickup at the local dealership. When you add items to the cart and go to checkout, their site will force you to pick a participating dealership near you and give you anywhere from 10-60%+ off MSRP on the part. If you go direct to the counter, chances are you'll pay full MSRP. Why?! I can't explain it to you. Toyota isn't the only manuf'er who does this.

At minimum I'd pick up some new OEM bolts and replace them 1 at a time.

 

Well after trials and tribulations it seems like I have finally installed these 22’ rims.

It is indeed possible, but requires too much work IMO. I still need to air up the tires but there attached.

For anyone else that attempts this, I would suggest ordering OEM lugs, 2” adapter spacers, and a leveling kit.

Issue i'm seeing is that the hub for 2001 is bigger than the 2022. I may be misunderstanding but I thought i'd need an adapter that had a different size outer hub than inner hub to make this work... Could you assist?
