Hey all, was wondering if anyone has found any hacks or jailbreaks for the 2023 infotainment screen now that my trail/included year of features has expired?

Doubt anyone here messes with software, it’s not like we got Saurik to build us Cydia for this thing.

If I was going to try this, it would be for ability to install obd2 app so I can monitor my transmission temp while towing. My dinky 8 inch screen isn’t made for YouTube watching. That’s why I got the iPad Pro LTE for the kids in the back to watch. But having a separate phone to monitor trans temp is annoying.

You can monitor trans and engine oil temps with a ScanGage 2 or 3.

The thing that really bothers me is that these newer vehicles' integrated infotainments and non-standard physical configurations pretty much eliminate the chance to go aftermarket. Back in the day not that long ago a simple head unit swap was all that you needed to get the latest and greatest. Now, at least for those of us with the 14", not happening... and if it ever fails out of warranty, we are probably talking several thousands of $$ to repair.

I like the old school SC2 for the small form factor and simple display. I have mine mounted on the steering column. One caveat with these is that unless they have changed their baseline setups you need to program them to display mfg specific parameters like these. It isn't that hard but can be a little finicky and annoying, stepping through some menus and entering the parameter codes.

So on SC3 I see you can just auto scan and it will pull up all existing sensor values, the SC2 doesn’t have that? How do you find the Trans Temp code then?

Pretty cool if SC3 does that automatically. For SC2 you go to their website and there are tables with make/model, etc and a list of supported parameters. Then you take those codes and go into the device edit function and enter the codes. It is like old school texting just stepping through each character to get to the letter or number that you need. And each data field is like 10 or more characters long IIRC. The other small catch is that there may be more than one code listed and you just have to do trial and error.

But there are some threads here where we have already figured these codes out and I'll look to see if I can find it.

Edit: here is the table to use for SC2, the 3.5l table: » TOYOTA – LEXUS – SCION (scangauge.com) Also, be advised that there is only one transmission temp for our Tundras.

I really like it, too, but the form factor makes finding a good spot for it more difficult. And for me, once this this is set up, I don't ever mess with it so the extra functions don't really matter to me. Good luck.

if you look at the fine print for the extended warranty there’s a lot of things that aren’t covered. I’m also planning on buying the warranty but mostly for the turbos than anything else.

What is your 14" dash controlling that an 8" is not? Are you sure your infotainment is really controlling anything at all? I swapped from my 8" to a 14" screen and I can see my truck on the toyota app like nothing ever happened.

Thinking more about the physical hole to somehow make an aftermarket work. It would be easier to make a kit to convert the 8" to double DIN.

Oh, the 14 and 8 inch mounting slots are identical behind the screen. But double din are so early 2000's, I wouldn't even want it on any 2020+ cars with factory android auto/carplay.

I agree... and there are bigger aftermarkets now. I plan to keep mine stock, but if it fails and there is a $3,000 repair bill? IDK.

I don't care about Netflix but I'd love maps (without navigation), or diagnostics like Torque where I can customize what sensors are displayed which would be pretty neat. If I could get android running on the stock head unit I could control my drone which would be sweet.

I am very torn about buying a warranty right now. In two years my lease will be over and I have the option to buy out the truck for $40,000. The question is will it be worth $40,000?or will I be able to find another used tundra for the same price in a higher trim level (my is just SR 4x4) with similar mileage that would be a better deal. Choices choices…..

to get a toyota new vehicle vsa, you have to purchase it before 3 yrs/36k miles from 1st in service date including lease's

edit : the above statement is misleading as lease's have a unique lease vsa i think.

if its a lease, you could go the used toyota vsa route, those are more expensive and the time/mileage start from the used buyout date. and from what i remember, you have to buy it at time of sale.

not sure if a buyout after a lease can be seen as a used vehicle. either go thru the certified route warranty or the used car vsa route.

used car vsa is 1yr/12k up to 5yr/60k from date of sale

tcuv (toyota certified used vehicle) vsa doesnt mention timeframe.

you can look all that up

    https://www.toyotafinancial.com/us/en/vehicle_protection_plan/vehicle_service_agreements.html

just select different dropdowns for new, tcuv or used vsa agreements.

edit: only the new vsa you can shop around for and usually get a lower price than 99% of the dealers will charge.

tcuv and used can only be bought at time of sale, so there is no wiggle room on time/price.

It does. I had an SG2 in my previous 4Runner (mounted on the column) and agree that adding in codes is somewhat tedious. I went for the SG3 in the new Tundra and it scans and automatically displays all of the items you can monitor. Being able to monitor 9 parameters on a single screen while towing is pretty slick. I mounted it just behind and to the left of the 14" screen and it works really well for me.

My dilemma is. Is it worth buying it now ( at 10k miles on it) if at the end of the lease I won’t be buying the truck out. I think for $40k I’ll be able to find something better.

toyota has a lease vsa which is not the same as a new vehicle vsa. be mindful of that.

if you lease, you can only get the used or certified vsa after you do the buyout.

Can you post a photo? What mount did you use? Sounds like I might need to upgrade.

    I used this mount - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0912GR7CK

The bottom of the mount sits in the tray in the dash behind the stereo. The arm that came with the mount was not long enough, so I printed my own arm out of ABS and used the other parts of the mount. I also used a small strip of 3M VHB tape on the bottom of the SG3 and the mounting is solid. I dremeled out a small channel next to the 12v socket in the tray and ran the ODB cable up through the dash and out that channel.

I’ll grab some pics in the morning and can send you the stl for the arm (or just throw it up on thingiverse) if you need it.
