After almost a year of searching Google for replacement speakers for a JBL premium audio system and hitting constant road blocks I have decided to start my own thread on the subject and document my results. I cant be the only sucker that bought the premium audio package and now has blown speakers, right?

    Things I think I know -

    * JBL Premium Audio has a built in crossover sending specific frequencies to specific speaker locations
    * The speakers used are 2 Ohm (this is the big 'gotcha' as 2 ohm speakers are not that common)
    * The front lower door speakers (this is what is blown on my truck) is not exactly a 6x9 speaker
    * With a Metra speaker adapter (Metra 82-8147 6"-6 3/4" Speaker Adapter) you can fit a more common 6-1/2" speaker
    * The front door speaker is a mid-woofer, you should not install a full range co-axial speaker

    My plan -
I bought a pair of CDT Audio CL-6.2 6.5" 2-Ohm Mid-range Speakers and the Metra adapter.

I'll report back next week after I receive and install. Wish me luck...

You sure these won't fit? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N1FBDVP/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_8?smid=ATBKBUXFLDT1Y&psc=1

I replaced the corner dash speakers with the 2.5" Kenwoods, the center channel with a leftover 3.5" Boston Acoustics 2-way, and the door tweeters with Hertz 26 OE (fit right into the stock holder). Everything else speaker-wise is stock, and I replaced the head unit with a Kenwood. I'm impressed with the sound, even running off the JBL amp. Good luck on your project.

Over the weekend I swapped in the new speakers.

Stock JBL Prem speakers, paper cone. The suspension has torn free from the frame -

I didnt buy the wire adapters (Covid Amazon shipping would take a couple weeks) but realized I could re-use the OE wire adapter -

The speakers and adapters fit perfectly. Of course I had to watch the TT door disassembly video a few extra times before I REALLY got it ;)

Busy music (rock, pop) the system sounds just like it originally did. Not great, but better without the blown cone.

Acoustic music sounds much better. Probably due to the higher quality driver in the new door speakers. I'd call it a success.

Those are 4 ohm speakers. Not sure how much it matters, but I chose to stick with 2 ohm as thats what the system was designed to use.

I agree that upgrading most or all of the stock system is a good plan, I'm just not interested in putting that kind of $$ into my trucks audio. I have a 'fun' car that gets more of the fun $$.

Is there any issues running 4 ohms instead of the 2 ohms speakers on the jbl amp?

My understanding is 4 ohm speakers with a 2 ohm amp will just give you reduced volume. The opposite (2ohm speakers on 4 ohm amp) can damage the amp.

I’m so glad you posted this. I too have the EXACT same problem. I didn’t want to go to all the trouble of pulling off the doors just to replace the speaker surround. So new speakers it is!!! And my sub is blown too but I’ve got that one narrowed down.
    Thanks again!

What did you do to replace the sun speaker? Did you keep the oem casing?
