295/70r18 with 4.6

    Like a lot of you I’ve been going back and forth on wheels and tires for a couple months. I have a 3/1 lift and currently running 275/55r20 but would love to go to a 295/70r18 but I’m worried about the 4.6s power since I’m 90% highway driving. Does anyone with a 4.6 have any input to help me out?

    I have the 3/2 lift and the 4.6 and I run the 285/70/18 Ridge Grapplers. The truck will pull them just fine but you can get rid of the throttle delay by getting a Pedal Commander. There are quite a few of us here that have one.

    5100s all around, 295-70-18 Defenders, BD reverse lights, de-badged, interior LEDs, footwell LEDs, reverse LEDs, ARE cap, front receiver hitch for cooler holder, cooler holder/rod rack, backup camera, Kenwood HU, Tyger nerf bars, Husky floor liners, folding rear seats, remote battery posts, plastidip grill chrome, Powder coat bumpers.
    What he said. I didn't see a difference in acceleration, only about 1.5 in mpg. I got a pedal commander a few months ago and the acceleration is better, but I don't think it made enough difference to care about. Except for the throttle delay, it helped a lot. I got the 295‐70-18 because I wanted width for sand. Works perfect for me.

    I hate to be a negative nancy, but i drove a 4.6 for a year and i tried to put 275/70/18’s on it. The small jump in tire diameter was instantly noticeable. The trans shifted in and out of 6th constantly. On the street it had to be kept in s mode to just use 5th. 6th gear was useless basically.

    4.6 only has 4.10 gears. Big difference from the 4.30 that the 5.7 has.

    If you want 295s, invest in 4.88 gears

    I did have that issue when I had 275/70's but mine doesn't seem to have it with the 285/70's. I do have the Hypertech speedo calibrator though.

    So do you think the speedo correction helps the truck know where to shift properly? So the truck doesn’t shift according to load or throttle input as much as it relies on miles per hour?

    I tried the hypertech thing it helps correct one problem. It stops the tranny from shifting up too early on every gear. It doesn’t help the downshift though, because that is a load issue. The computers feels like its bogging down

    I have the 4.7L in my 08, and I would probably keep it with 275/70/18. Gives me the better look from stock and still able to run 33's, but I think the 295's will take away performance. With it being my daily driver, I can't do it right now. One day if I'm able to keep my truck just to have a truck and have something else I daily drive, I'll probably revisit the 295 situation haha.
