285/70/18 is there a downside?

    I have 14k on my 2023 SR5 TRD Pro.

    The tires it came with are terrible and it’s about time to get something different.

    I do not have the red TRD wheels. I have the all black 18” ones. The stock size is 265/70/18.

    I’ve read a lot of tire threads and know I can get away with bigger tires. But if I step up the width to 285 instead of 265, is there a downside except maybe some gas mileage? Warranty void, etc or any others you can think of.

    There is only a few limited options available in that size which makes them more expensive.

    I wanted to run 285's on my TRD OR with 18" wheels and 265 OEM tires, but I'd pick a lower profile than 70 on the 285s to retain the original overall diameter. That happens to be 285/65-18. I am not willing to take an MPG hit with taller tires. The problem I have is that Michelin lists the smallest approved wheel width for that tire as 8" whereas my OR wheels are 7.5" wide. So, I'd have to also get new wheels. Sheesh. I am not sure how wide the TRD Pro 18 inchers are, but you should have a look at that and also at the tire specs to make sure they are compatible.

    This is the tire I want, XL version, not Load Range E version... if only my wheels were a little wider. :-(

    Poor man's limited; Fox 2.0 & 5100s; 285/70 RG
    Cost of tire, limited options (in case you're away from home and suffer a blowout/need a replacement).


    I like the size/look with a 1" lift up front, but I will likely switch to a 285/75 when the time comes.

    Other than lack of tires in that size (there are still some good choices) the only "downside" is that they will be E load. So they are heavier and will ride harder than the stock standard load tires. So there will be a small performance and MPG hit.

    275/70-18 is almost as big. Tons of options and types available....many will also be E load. And then 285/75 which are metric 35s, again lots of good options and they will also be E load.

    E load or not is a preference....many of us run that load rating. Tuff and good for towing or off road, very stong, but do ride firmer and are heavy.

    Thanks for the info man. Yeah i'm not very concerned about it riding rough.

    I just want something a little beefier for towing and occasional off-roading. I hadn't really considered the 275 or the 285/75. I keep finding conflicting info online on whether or not that would even fit a stock TRD off road Gen 3.

    Gen 3 has lots of room for tires. Folks have fit 35x1250s with the right offset wheels on unlifted trucks. Either size should fit a stock truck with the stock offset wheels.

    I wish Toyota made a poverty spec TRD Pro wheel out of cast aluminum. 8" width and 47mm offset with 285s would be a great setup. But I am not going to pay $3500 for set of wheels.
