I just noticed that the PO from my recently purchased tundra put 245/70r16 tires in the front and 265/70r16 in the back(on stock/original wheels). What possible reason would there be to have different sizes from the front and back and is this at all normal to do?

It has bilstein 4600s but everything else is stock and no lift so there shouldn't be an issue for rubbing anything if they were both 265 right?

Definitely don't engage 4wd until you have the same size tires front and back!
    265/70r16 is the stock size.

Yeah I definitely won't--I think this might also help explain why I would sometimes get serious vibrating/shaking issues when driving about 40-50 mph and getting worse when letting off the gas. ( I have since greased up the driveshaft). I'm just puzzled as to why he did that though.

Used tires are cheap. Especially if you dont know you aren't supposed to mix tire sizes.

The thing is, he specifically ordered them from tirerack. I have the invoice from the list of all the service he supposedly done before selling--that's mainly on me for not looking at that closer and not noticing myself. The guy runs his own small used car dealership

Ah, yeah that's really odd. Well if the 265s are pretty new, maybe you only need to buy 2 tires.

Maybe the truck had the smaller stock 245's on it and when he entered it into TireRack, the larger 265 popped up and that is what he ended up ordering? Those are both stock tire sizes on these trucks.

Yeah they were purchased in August and still look good so I guess thats the bright side. I knew this guy didn't know wtf he was talking about when he tried to tell me you aren't supposed to engage in 4h while the car is moving despite it saying so in the manual and on the label with instructions on the driver side sun visor right in front of your face. He insisted that it is only supposed to be engaged in neutral while stopped (which is only true for 4lo).

Thanks-- Sounds like a viable explanation actually. Now since I have to replace 2 tires, begs the question --which ones? 245 being narrower may give a bit of a smoother/quieter ride to my understanding correct? (I know we're not talking about a huge difference here, but I am curios and also just good info to know).

Stupid question, but what happens when you need to properly rotate your tires using any of the common/popular methods? I think I'd stick with a uniform size on all 4 and just expect you'll have slightly less tread on one pair than the other.

Good point and I'm sure I would've been SOL had I not noticed the different sizes. I can live with the slightly less tread on 1 pair, it's barely been driven. Just considering which size I want to stick with between 245 or 265. Leaning toward 245

For me, solely from a looks perspective, I'd go with the bigger tire. You'll also get accurate speedo reading that way. I suppose smaller tire would give better gas mileage though. Really depends what you're using the truck for.

Maybe his Other auto was a Porsche? Which makes it Extra fun cuz you cannot rotate tires (except side to side) LOL.

Down in Houston area I've seen 2wd guys put a size or two up MTs in the rear and stock size ATs or street tires in front. It's like a broke redneck thing.
But never heard of doing it in a 4wd.
I've definitely thought about running wider tires in the rear like11.5 vs a 10.5 in front.

In my opinion bigger tire is always better on a 4wd. You could go 265/75R16 without a lift.

lol @broke redneck thing. Good to know, I'm also in need of new wheels. Could I go up to 17" without a lift? Mainly seen some 17" trd wheels people are selling around me and it would also be nice for the brake upgrade (requires 17"+)

I did that to my 93 Ford Ranger 2wd. I had 31x10.5x15 MT on the rear and 30x9.5x15 AT on the front. Couldn't use 5th gear because of the adjusted gear ratio (stock tire was 195/70R14) and I managed to get the front end stuck in the mud while fishing with it. LOL Buried it almost to the frame trying to rock it out.

im going to guess it was an older dude and he thought the stance looked good, alot of mini truck guys here do it both taller and wider in the rear like its some kinda dragster hot rod or something. LOL

You're gonna have to figure out what it is you want to do with your money. You could fit 24s on the truck with no lift if the tire size was right. Rim size doesn't change based on lift height.

You're gonna have to go down the rabbit hole of tire sizes that fit with or without lift. Easy option here is get two tires that match the size you want to go with. Best but most complicated option is get the wheels you want that will fit with the suspension setup you want as well.

Another rabbit hole to get lost in lol. I'll be keeping an eye out for marketplace deals and going to stick with 265/70R16s for now--just ordered 2 for the front to replace the 245s (Advanta AT 800's for $320 shipped and installation)

Just watch FB Marketplace. I needed new tires for my truck that was my dad's and had been sitting for years and dry rotted 4 brand new tires. I found a set of decent 17" 4-Runner Snowflake rims with acceptable tires (265/70-17's) for $300. I have seen others since that are the same rims with brand new tires (take-offs) for between $600-700 as well. These have the same backspacing as the stock16's that came off of the truck and fit very well with no lift.

That sounds like what I've been seeing in my area too. and good to know, I'll eventually get either 16's or 17's depending on the deal then. Ideally want something black to go with my desert sand paint job. I did actually see a 17" 4 runner black snowflake set--I do like those. $300 would be a great deal

Black snowflakes would look awesome on that color truck. Not sure how they would look on my red AC. I am waiting for a coworker to sell his 17x7.5 7 spoke FJ Cruiser/4-Runner rims. I found one for $100 that was someone'd spare on their FJ Cruiser and had a brand new tire for my spare tire. Then I could have a matching set for my Tundra. He is looking at a different FJ rim that he wants to powder coat black for his silver Tacoma. I'll post some pictures after I get off work. They won't upload right now.
