Interesting issue I’m going back and forth with the dealer on. A couple weeks ago my truck started making a rattle from underneath.. proportionate to the speed. The faster you go the quicker the rattle/vibration. (Edited to add it sounds like it’s outside the cab, underneath middle or driver, somewhere in drivetrain)

Due to the cold and snow I figured it was maybe just ice buildup. Well it’s warmed up and the sound persists. I took it to the dealer, they drove it and insisted they never heard it. I picked it up and heard it again on the drive home. Made a second appt, dropped it off only to be told they’re not hearing it. Went down this morning and showed them the linked clips, as well as took the advisor on a drive and he finally heard it as well.

It’s morphed into the occasional flutter/rattle sound, sometimes clunks, and there’s always what sounds to me like a faint grinding sound. I can feel the clunks on the bottom of the cab when it makes the noise, and it’s completely intermittent in frequency and intensity, but it’s always there. I’m attempting to link some videos where you can hear what sounds like a woodpecker…

I left the truck with them and asked them to look again. They’ve said they checked everything and aren’t finding anything loose, foreign objects, etc. I’m waiting for a call back after he circulates the recordings around, but don’t know where to go from here. I guess I’ll ask them to put in writing that they heard the issue and itemize what they’ve done/checked. Just because the truck seems fine otherwise I can’t live with the idea that something isn’t wrong… maybe I forward their comments and the sounds to Toyota.

Trying to attach imgur link to videos but kinda new here, forgive me if it doesn’t work. Nothing to “see” in them, more for the audio.

Hopefully this works. Someone confirm I’m not crazy if you have a moment. Thanks all!

Sounds like mechanical more than a rattle if it changes with speed. Reminds me of a bad universal joint or a throw out bearing on a manual trans. Odd sound. Hope they can diagnose it soon.

Thanks for having a listen. Maybe rattle is the wrong word for it but it’s pretty random in how it presents. Sometimes it’ll be two or three “clunks” in the same tone range, other times like what you heard in the video.

Not very hopeful they’ll find much. After two trips the advisor seems pretty adamant they’ve checked everything they could and as the truck seems to be running fine there’s not a whole lot they can do. He keeps trying to return the truck but I keep asking them to look again. Maybe it’s time to get the clips to corporate or another dealer… (he did admit my truck was the first 3rd gen the assigned tech has worked on)
