I will start by saying I have been very happy with my third gen so far. I haven’t had any of the issues of the earlier 2022 builds and the truck has everything I need. My only reservation is the 22 gallon tank. This problem is self induced as I chose to purchase a truck that had that size tank. Honestly, I was not the best consumer and should have done a bit more research. I found a truck that met my needs, but didn’t realize it had the 22.5 gallon tank option. Please go easy on my ignorance.

I wanted to create this thread to get an idea of what others are getting for range out of their 22 gallon tanks. So far, I have been seeing mostly under 300 miles per tank. That seems a little low to me. I understand the refuel comes on early and there is about a 4 gal reserve. The most I have gotten on a tank was 320 miles, and it took about 21 gallons on fill up.

I am lifted and truck is reading a 15ish mpg average. Also a bit disappointing. I have TRD lift with 275 70 R18s. So a little extra size and weight, but nothing too extreme.

Any inputs from those in the community running the 22 gallon tank would be really appreciated. Honestly, on the fence about keeping the truck because of this, just really wanted more range and even with 22 gallons Toyota is advertising much more per tank. Thanks in advanced.

    Depends on your mpg…

most are saying the large tank takes 26 gal when the fuel light turns on. That would mean 390 miles before the light turns on at 15 mpg.

I have 22 gal tank and I’m getting about 235 miles now. Started at 254.

my 2nd gen has the big tank and I was getting close to 400.

I could get 300+ on a tank. I typically fill up when i have about 1/4 tank so i'm usually around 260-280 miles. My truck is bone stock.

270 +/- miles per tank is the range given when full.
Averaging 15-16 mpg with 35’s and a lift.
Usually fill up with 1/4 tank or 50-60 miles of range left on the screen display. 14-16 gallons to fill on average.
Haven’t run it down to the light coming on.

This article is depressing. These are some very low ranges. My last truck was Ram Ecodiesel that went 650 miles between fill ups. I knew I had to have larger tank with lower mpg. I get around 480 on the larger tank. Do miss the range on the old Eco D though

I agree. I am sharing my depression haha. Under 300 range for a full size truck is kind of unbelievable this day and age. It is crazy to me that Toyota even made at 22.5 gallon option.

I have been looking at the 1500 Duramax, some appealing aspects to it. Maybe down the road some day. For now, I am stuck with a tiny gas tank and sub par MPGs

I'm now on my 2nd tank of gas and am like, WTF?! When shopping for this truck the Toyota website under "Limited" specs, Weights/Capacities, Fuel System, Standard fuel tank 32.2 gal and no other option. I have a limited but as near as I can tell the tank is 22 ish.

2023 Limited, I force, crewmax, 6.5 bed, TRD off road

    I can't find anything that would state I shouldn't have a 32.2 gal tank.

Generally auto manufacturers shoot for having a minimum of 300 miles to a tank on any tank size offered. That's also based off a completely stock vehicle. As soon as you start adding lifts and tires you are changing the formula and you'll pay at the pump. I don't think you can blame the manufacturer for MPGs or range under 300 when you arent stock.

I get 328 a tank. it’s slowly going up started at 300 when I first got it. Only thing I’ve done to it was add the trd filters

Conspiracy theory, if we all get used to having a crappy range in our ICE vehicles, we will be happy with that range in an EV…
I’m averaging 16-18 mpg with my 3” lift and 35x12.5 r20 tires. That is about 1 mpg average less that the 2019 Taco I traded in. Works for me.

Yup. Ranges never seem to increase with fuel efficiency and paint keeps getting thinner, too. Blame the EPA and CA enviro laws, not the manufacturers.

The weight saved by not having 5-10 gallons and a thousand little weight reductions that add up to a couple MPGs are all direct results of pleasing regulation before pleasing customers.

Fuel gauge coupled with truck electronics ie avg mpg and remaining distance hit the nail on the head with the gallens pumped in to fill. So, visual on fuel gauge, computed by trucks ECU, physically by volume to fill tank, all three point to a gas tank volume being about 22 gal.

EPA fuel economy test bins a vehicle based on where its curb weight falls within a certain range. For trucks, that weight range spans 500 lbs so there’s no reason to make a gas tank smaller unless the trucks curb weight is right on the edge of the curb weight range. A gallon of gasoline weighs 6 lbs…

I'm averaging 220 miles on my Tundra with 37" tires. 220 miles per tank is adjusted taking into account the larger tires, etc.

Since all sorts of models have been mentioned here, I might as well add mine in. 2010 4.6v8 very long tow pkg. rwd stock 130k miles 26gal tank. Here's what I get with little effort.

    Screenshot_20230709-142405_Gallery.jpg

When really trying hard, I can get 260mi at half rank mark. Slow down, you'll drive longer. And no revs.

My 2023 SR’s 22 gallon tank sucks. 300 miles if I drive highway, but most highway driving I do is towing my RV so I only get max 200miles per tank. Really trying to find someone with knowledge about swapping out to a 32 gallon tank. There’s plenty of empty space under the truck to fit the bigger tank.’looks like it will just need an additional bracket and somehow dealer to calibrate it to reflect a bigger tank. 32 gal Tank for 3rd gen is $900

What size camper do you have? I bought a new Tundra on Friday and am curious how it will pull my 23' pull behind.

It’s fairly small. With everything in it it’s like 5000lb. Tundra pulls it without problem through PA mountains. It’s Puma UltraLite 16bhs

22 Tundra sr5 4X4 (approx 13k miles on the truck)
    Leer 100R topper
Fuel 20" rims with 275/60/20 Falken Wildpeaks
    Borla exhaust

    My driving conditions:
I live in SoCal (orange county) so there aren't many hills and I'm mainly freeway driving. I turn off the auto shut off and the vehicle is always in sport mode. I let her cruise the freeways at 80 with the rest of the flow of traffic. I also tow a 19 foot center console at least once of month to the launch ramp. Probably only 50 miles of towing per month.

I get approx 415-420 miles on a tank (using premium 91 fuel). I think I was only getting about 380ish miles when using regular gas. Without trying to conserve fuel the truck gets on average 14.5-14.9 mpg.

    Stock besides GFC camper.

Since purchasing the typical range I would see would be close to 500 miles per tank using 87, 80/20 highway/city driving.

My daily commute is around 50 miles round trip, so a little under 2 weeks of driving before having to fill up strictly commuting and using my wife’s car on the weekends.

I now have been driving around with a GFC camper in the back for around a month and the range has dropped to around 400-450 miles?

Range ultimately comes down to your driving style, conditions, and mods.

I didn’t get the truck for fuel economy but was surprised at the numbers it typically puts out day to day.

With the 22 gallon tank the displayed range is 288 on fill up.
Mileage average is 15.5 on display, with 35’s and 3” lift.
Add 7% for wheel size so 16.5 mpg and 308 mile range.

Others in this thread posting 400 plus range must have the 33 gallon tank.
