I have a company car I drive and havent driven/started up my truck in 3 weeks. Went to start it today,,, the dreaded click click click. Everything else turned on, but not enough to start the engine.

I got it started with my little jump box,,, drove it around for an hour, turned it off and it started right up. I will monitor this week, but plan on stopping by the dealership next Saturday for them to have a look.

Surely a new battery couldnt go flat so soon??

    Any suggestions?

I wouldn’t think, but I don’t know what’s normal with these. I don’t typically leave mine more than a week.

New cars with all their electronics, if it's sitting for more than a week, I'd be hooking up a tender. Never really thought about it till we bought a new RV on a Mercedes Sprinter chassis. The tech doing our walk around said to keep it on a tender, as they get lots of calls for weird electrical gremlins. Once he mentions to customers to keep on a tender, he never hears from them again.

Wife also just bought a new to us (2022) Mercedes GLE and I was doing some studying on youtube for maintenance tasks etc. and they said the same thing, keep it on a tender if not driven regularly. I have been surprised at how much charging is going on even after driving the car for 30-45 minutes on the highway. My 4A charger will be using 3-4A when I first hook it up and not drop to 2A for hours, over night it will be down to .5A but still not fully charged.

Never bothered with a tender until now, my 2016 F-150 will sometimes sit for weeks and always starts right up. Replaced the OEM battery after 7 years, not because it failed but winter was coming and I figured 7 years was decent life. I just read that average battery life on a new car is 3-5 years!

Good advice, but not necessarily anything new. I’ve always heard 5years on an automotive battery. I keep tenders on any vehicles I don’t drive regularly.

I was at a Toyota dealership last week with my mom's RAV4 having a recall item replaced.

on the dealership floor a new tundra battery was toast. They had to swap it out to finally get it started (truck sold).

I’ve had two Toyota branded batteries die prematurely, one at 18 months and another at 11. After that I went to AGM and have been having better luck.

My GT86 that’s my secondary car and hasn’t been driven much had a battery die at less than 6 months old. New shit is shit.

That may or may not hold true. Battery life is highly dependent on climate where you live. In FL, if you get 3 years, you got your monies worth.

Heat is hard on battery health so to speak. Mine sits a week at a time without starting it. I have a company vehicle. Never had any trouble yet.

Is there any historical comparison of that chart? I think the argument is that battery quality is worse today than it was “yesterday”.

Curious how far back the data for this chart goes, and/or how this data is compiled?

My 24 sat all week in the Texas heat and it fired right up.

While it's true that the electronics on modern vehicles constantly draw a small drain on the battery when the engine is off, it absolutely should not cause the battery to die in 3 weeks.

My wife's 2022 4Runner often sits for more than a month at a time, but has never failed to start. She did leave her driver's door slightly ajar once, which resulted in a dead battery from the interior lights remaining on.

OP, I'm guessing you left something on, or have an electrical short somewhere.

Charge it, if you have an issue with it replace with AGM and move on with life.

As for the commenter talking about a dead battery on the dealership showroom........... vehicles at the dealer lots are burning batteries down all the time with people in/out of them fiddling with the electronics without starting the vehicle.

Batteries are also a very consumable item, most last 3 years, some don't, and some go a lot longer.

300 hectares on single tank of kerosene
Lousy tires, a short-lived battery and an empty fuel tank are provided with the purchase of any brand new vehicle. I'll make whatever nasty comment(s) I have to to get the fuel topped off by the dealership though lol.

No joke about the tires, I got 21k miles out of the Wildpeak AT3Wa 20" before I had cords showing. No towing, etc. Alignment was spot on. Used it as an opportunity to get better tires on 18" rims.

The problem is obvious. You bought a third-gen.

    Just kidding, of course!
