This isnt a good look. The tires were not even turned, or just barely.

Im glad Toyota is still putting the 6' bed on the Tacoma so there is enough space to carry all the spare CV's you'll need at the starbucks drivethru.

I just saw that on YT and was about to post too. I really can't believe the CV snapped like that. It didn't look like it was binding hard enough to snap. Plus, I'm guessing these are jus 31" P-rated tires...so we're not talking 100+ lbs worth of aftermarket wheels and E-rated, 10-ply tires.

They're posting a long form video later. I'm anxious to watch it. Not that any of the TFL crew are very "mechanically-inclined." So, I'm not expecting a teardown, but I would like to hear more about the conditions and what they were doing the led up to the failure.

If you look in the back ground, there was a Ford Bronco Sport with them, so whatever the truck endured up to that point probably wasn't all that crazy.

But yeah I'm kind of curious too. With it still having rear wheel drive there is really only 3 things that could have died; front driveshaft, front differential, or CV's.

Also curious if the Colorado took a different line up the obstacle or what.

Sorry, but that just didnt seem that extreme. I understand he was spinning a bit but that was a pretty mild situation.

Doesn't motivate me to run out and buy the new truck for sure. More evidence that you should avoid 1st year production of vehicles.

To anyone who wants to watch this video: Let me give you the gift of time back in your day and save you 38 mins:
    • The first 9 minutes of the video is their usual truck comparison format: New Colorado vs New Tacoma.
    • At 9:50(ish) the CV axle snaps on the Tacoma. That's my guess because it sounds like the classic "pop" of a CV axle snapping.
    • The next 25 minutes of the video is a masterclass in how why you SHOULD NEVER go off roading (especially in winter) without proper gear.
    • At 35 minutes they return to the studio to summarize for 3 more minutes.
    • This will turn into another drawn out video series for them because they've said:
      • They're going to do another video where they put it on the 4-wheel rollers to see what's happening (not going to tell them anything they don't already know)
      • Then they'll do another video where they take it to the dealership for repair
    • They don't ever show any actual damage or what failed in the drivetrain.
      • They don't even crawl under the truck with the camera to look for damage (would've been the first thing I did).
    You're welcome.

Looked to me like it was something internal in the front diff, maybe the tcase. They filmed the CV's on both sides, no sign of damage or leaks. Also, they struggled to get it out of 4lo to 4hi, that's not CV's to my knowledge.

So basically you put a lot of effort into sneering at TFL. Why? You clicked on the vid, therefore they got revenue from Youtube. It's not your money. I don't understand why you put so much effort into sneering at them, meanwhile you gave them Youtube revenue. If you commented, you gave them more revenue. If you don't like TFL, don't click on their vids, very simple concept.

Not going to derail this thread (anymore than it is) by outlining my opinions on TFL. You're welcome to your opinions and so am I.

Regarding the shots of the CVs, they show only still images. There's no effort to troubleshoot (shown on camera) by checking for play in the CVs, etc.

It could be the transfer case. It could be the shearing of the pinion teeth on the CV and now interfering inside the CV. It could be CV joint in the boot snapping and it fouling up the computer when it sensed the RPM rev right after the pop. Who knows. Time will tell.

No sweat about opinions, but basically just don't click on the vids, that's the base revenue. Then comments add revenue to the Youtube algorithm for each vid. None of it comes out of my pocket so I don't care what they do to generate revenue for their business.

Yep, time will tell. Something janked prematurely and that was on ice. Roman was clearly rattled, Andre took the wheel and worked it back and forth to get it out of 4lo, rear locker unlocked, and into 2wd. I would have done the same with two support vehicles and manpower. Just get it into 2wd and go.

Less than 3% of Tacoma users will subject their Tacoma to anything close to that is the sad thing.

What I would be more concerned about is it looked like the inside cab space is even smaller than previous generations. The video they did with the seats all the way up and their knees were buried in the seat and head against the roof. Not that there was much room ever in the Tacoma, but it looks like they have decreased cab space like Toyota is doing in a lot of their vehicles.

I sat in a 2023 Colorado ZR2 and it was also pretty tight. Tight back seats and not a lot of head room.

The only mid-sized truck that actually has a decent size interior is the Gladiator. I had driven a few of them, then went and drove the ZR2, and then went back and drove one more gladiator the next day and the Gladiator is just a roomier interior all around.

Obviously, I have not seen a Ranger yet, but if I had to go buy a mid-sized truck right now, it would be a Gladiator Rubicon Ecodiesel. Other than a bit of wind noise from the removable top they were all around great to drive.

I think they are using the same CV's in the new Tacoma that they use in the Tundra.
