Just received emaul today that 2024 Land Cruiser is officially released! With a link to build your own. Except the build portion of the site isn't working. Must be too many people rushing in to secure their order. lol

It’s madness like this (plus the inevitable dealer shenanigans) that make me thankful to have two bulletproof rigs. I can just sit and watch the insanity from the sidelines.

A friend of mine just ordered a $104k suburban. Read that again.

104k for a suburban! I can’t see spending more than 60k on any kind of vehicle, and I love vehicles. I’d sooner buy used than spend over 60k personally. Is everyone just rich and/or financially irresponsible, or am I just poor to not consider spending that much on a vehicle? Based on state and national income statistics I didn’t think I was poor, but lately I’m questioning. I do have a 2nd gen though, so probably just poor.

I too have been pondering this. I don’t understand how people can afford all these new cars at these prices today! I use to think I was middle class, but I sure feel poor lately (just without the government and tax benefits)

My wife and I have been asking ourselves the same question for the last 3 years. We’d joke and sometimes say we’re poor. That came to an abrupt end when my son went to school and told his teachers we were poor

    Maybe we are :notsure:

Haha, it’s probably better for the children to assume you’re poor than rich at least. Gotta curb those expectations.

I can really relate to this comment. I know I am not poor, but damn, some people are balling out of control in these new vehicles. I try not to compare because comparison is the thief of joy. But sometimes, I question if I missed out on some good-paying jobs out there, haha. In my humble opinion and perspective, the overpaying for vehicles started with the TRD Pro lineup in 2015. Dealers were marking those trucks up by 5-10k and fools were paying for it.

To be honest, I am grateful to sit here on the sidelines and watch folks make questionable financial choices on vehicles. To be clear, I am unlikely ever to buy a new vehicle. I am very comfortable working on Toyotas from 1996 thru 2020ish. Knowing how to maintain and repair my own vehicle saves me so much money and gives me so much peace of mind. I look forward to evenings in the garage making my Toyota's better or maintaining them.

I do look forward to seeing how folks customize these new Land Cruisers. I hope these new LCs live up to everyone's hopes and expectations.

Whatever this forum told me to do
    sage advice.

I'm doing everything I can to keep my '20 1794 on the road for 15 years.
I love the non-complex nature of it.

    well...kinda not true....I S/C'd it...so there's that.

but other than that....I'm sticking to my plan!!

My son graduates & goes to work in Oct.
He has a '15 4runner. (my old one)
he told me he's going to keep it till the wheels fall off.
He told me he cannot imagine paying >60k for an SUV without having a career first (being able to pay cash)

all that being said...the GX550 is very nice.

We bent over and paid MSRP for the 22 Sequoia TRD PRO, the last of V8. Not a typical purchase, but

    - I knew the platform is great
    - I knew it is easier to own a vehicle long term if you get it new, because I neglect nothing and often overreact
    - we just sold wife's 5 y.o. Volvo, which we got with heavy discount and sold for insane post-COVID used car money

There’s a strong argument to be made that the 2G Sequoia is still a better platform than the 3G Sequoia, GX550, LX600, and the new ‘24 Prado that isn’t called a Prado.

It has the most versatile transfer case, the most cargo room, the highest axle ratings, the biggest 3rd row with the best footwell (ind rear suspension ftw), the best at hauling long boards in a pinch with the roll-down rear window, and is the least complicated overall.

Tandem Off-road has also shown that it can be built into a solid off-roading platform with minimal effort. They called its rear CV axles “comically humongous” and have tried unsuccessfully to break them just to see where the failure point is.

I still think it’s the most underrated Toyota on the road. If I hadn’t found an immaculate 570 for a good deal, we’d be in one no question.

Sequoia is a family wilderness hauler. Think of lone roads hundreds of miles away from a nearest human settlements. You just need a reliable vehicle that can get there and back. For strict offroading I have a Tundra :) Both rigs are great!

We bought our Tahoe LT new in 2001. A couple of years later I remember thinking how stupid we were for paying $35K for it and the associated payment. We also decided to 'keep it till the wheels fall off'. It was my DD until last Aug when I bought my 21 DC. It just rolled 200K and my oldest son is now driving it. We just happened to luck into one of the best most reliable Chevys in the past few decades. However, the experience of a high monthly payment cured us of the new car bug. We've bought used, paying cash, ever since and currently have a set of well-maintained Toyotas (21 Tundra, 14 4R and 13 Highlander) except the Tahoe of course.

ah...good to see someone that is in the know.

Repo guys are so busy, they are getting paid extra to only work for certain banks.

    it's nasty out there.

If I was more smart...I would say a "bailout" is coming. and us hardworking folks are NOT going to benefit.

I would agree. When I worked in Fremont, CA I had the graveyard shifts on Saturday night, getting off Sunday morning. There was this repo guy that would come to the gas station across the street and would be doing glamor shots of these cars hooked up. Open doors, closed doors, whole 9 yards. He was there every Saturday night with a vehicle hooked up while I drove in and Sunday morning with another vehicle hooked up while I was leaving. I left 2 years ago Word I got from a friend he is still busy.

Bruh, I've seen a few trucks roaming down my neighborhood late in the evenings. Black trucks no labeling, can't say I don't know what they're doing. lol

Lol. I feel poor. First house i ever bought was only $113k. In 2007.
The idea of even going 40k on a car bugs me.

As long as there are enough customers paying, prices will keep climbing.

I thought it was the new 4Runner from previous pictures I saw.
I really can't see them offering a 4Runner after this.
An engine smaller than my wifes Outback.
My 4Runner has the Torsen full time 4wd, more cubic space than the new Sequoia and a rolldown rear window.
    1200 lbs payload.
How much is this LC's payload ?
    Another hard sell for me?

I have had this idea in the back of my mind for a while that I have held back from mentioning because I wanted to give Toyota the benefit of the doubt. But here it is:

From what we’re seeing so far, I’m just not thrilled about this shared TNGA-F platform.

All of our favorite Toyota/Lexus platforms are now FAR more alike than different. The new Sequoia has no idea if it wants to be a Tahoe competitor or a 300 series consolation prize and IMO fails hard at both.

Who knows what the upcoming 4Runner will be (please Lord, let it not be a neutered Bronco Sport competitor…).

The 3rd gen Tundra has narrow SUV frame rails under the cab, mismatched CV axles, FAR less articulation, and has in general lost the simple, rugged, off-road oriented spirit of all the previous Tundras. (Not saying there aren’t some who love the new direction…)

Underneath the new GX is a stripped down LX, and the new LC (Prado) is now a…slightly different GX???

Just seems like Toyota is combining bags of LEGO parts, and all the vehicles based on this new platform are slightly different combinations of these parts with styling and badging being the biggest differences. I know there are some size and seating differences and that Toyota has always shared tech and drivetrains across various models, but this feels different and not in a good way.

My opinion. Maybe I’ll warm up to it. It’s just…weird.
