Has anyone installed a cold air intake? I’d like more turbo noice and an intake made a big difference on my wrx

I'm kind of in the same boat, don't feel like there will be much measurable difference. The boxes on the ones available and likely all the ones to come are still pulling air from the same part of the engine compartment. How would that air be any cooler. The other argument is density/increased airflow from the larger filter. Which still doesn't seem like there would be any benefit unless the throttle is wide open at higher RPMs. Which we all know this vehicle doesn't really run at high RPMs. So considering that, the amount of airflow required where most of us run this is well below the handling capacity of the current filter. Not only that, but the throttle body is going to limit the amount of air let in regardless at that point. So your only advantage at that point is denser/cooler air which I don't see how you get with it located in the exact same spot pulling air from the same spot. Maybe someone smarter with actual diagnostic data for the current gen stock vs cold air intake can chime in.

But you add a snorkel to the air box and they will breath. That’s why I’m waiting on volant or arb.

So I’m a Boeing engineer, my job is air flow. Tell you wait till they can breath.

Don't get me wrong, they'll provide some improvement with other mods or accessories, but the ones listed and many others that come later won't make much difference. If you've got a snorkel or get the breather to a spot with cooler air coming in, you'll likely see some measurable improvement in gas milage, but probably wouldn't feel any difference in power. I saw a formulation once that showed you'd need a 60 degree drop in air temp to get a hp improvement of 0-5 hp. While that's an improvement, I'd be willing to bet no one on this forum could objectively feel a difference between 389hp and 394hp for iForce or 437hp vs 441hp for the hybrid.

The ("cold air" allegedly) intake boxes actually pull air from front quarter panels, some people have installed 1/4" galvanized screen between the box and quarter panel to prevent mice from entering and making a condo out of the filter box...

k&n makes a kit too but shows it out of stock. Maybe the drop ins are the way to go until there are more options in the market.

my Subaru kit came with a box to separate the hot engine bay from the colder air and also makes it look stock

Couple of years back-2018??? on the 4Runner forum-same discussion. What does a CAI system really do? What are the improvements. So a 4Runner owner did a dyno run to find base, then installed TRD CAI and another Dyno run couple hours apart. Improvement was there and from memory was like 8 WHP and 16 FT Pounds of torque. MPG increase was negligible.

The biggest increase was the noise from the engine in WOT = Sounded like a SC in the bay.

Big difference for turbos vs naturally aspirated engines. A lot of turbo engines pull boost and timing when the air charge is hot. Keeping the air cold doesn’t really increase power but rather mitigates power loss when it’s hot.

The intake from the fender that Toyota does on all trucks is not really a cold air intake though. Ford’s stock intake is a good example of a cold air intake because it takes air in right between the grill and the hood. Old WRX’s have a similar system.
