Tried pulling a heavy car hauler and an old truck with some parts. Had a spare set of wheels and tires and tools in the bed along with a front truck clip inside the international on the trailer. Guessing between 8-9k with a heavy tongue and no weight distribution. Only modification I have is the timbren SES bump stops. Hauled the load great using a Curt echo wireless brake controller. Got about 10-12mpg towing 55-70mph on the interstate. Kept it in S7 to keep it out of overdrive.

That old International looks like a fun project.

    Sure does. Looks sweet.

I have yet to see anyone prove me wrong that the towing capacity of the SR is reduced only on paper in order to sell more SR5+ trims.

Same axle. Same brakes. Same frame. Same wheels. Same tires. Same transmission, differential, gear ratio, transfer case wheel bearings - it’s all literally the same except for a reduction of 31hp in boost which is not needed whatsoever.

Does not have the tow/haul mode, otherwise no difference. Just use sport mode to lock out overdrive. Payload is the biggest issue with any half ton the brochure “max” tow ratings is meaningless if you play it by the book.

So the SR does have sport mode? At least that's something. What annoys me is they offer a tow package but all it includes is a hitch receiver and wiring harness. Why won't they let me get tow mirrors and a trailer brake controller? I really want the SR so I'm trying to find out if I can add the mirrors myself and if any of the wiring is there for a brake controller or if I have to start from scratch.
How do you like the Timbrens?

Just need timbrens for sag, the sport mode just allows you to select the top final gear, just to keep it out of overdrive. Otherwise it tows fine. Curt echo allows a wireless brake controller as long as you have a 7 pin connection.

Looks like the Timbrens work well, your truck looks pretty level with the trailer on. It's good to hear the positive towing experience. Thank you

By sport mode he means S1-10. Manual shifting. There are no drive modes on SRs. It is a man's truck.

What would you consider acceptable proof? It doesn't have the tow mode and is down on HP and torque because of tuning. With this in mind the people who designed the truck state that it isn't rated as high. If you won't believe engineers who built it, then who can possibly provide a "proof" that you would accept? You are rejecting it on what basis? Oh, because you own one and your confirmation bias compels you?

Burden of proof lies on the prosecution. If you are going to state that they are lying to sell the trucks then you need to prove it.

I just did that above. Read my first post in the thread.

The only difference is HP, and 350hp can tow 10,000lbs. The Sierra 1500 has 355hp and is rated for 10,000lbs. The Ram 3.0 has even fewer hp and can tow even more.

The engineers did not write the advertising - advertisers and bean counters did.

You're making assumptions. That is not proof of anything.

The truck does not have tow/haul mode. That is a difference that you keep evading. You do not know the stresses of the engine and how that tow haul mode alters that. You do not know the impact that could have on the long term towing capability. It is ALSO down on power, and that certain plays a role. Saying "that completely different design has a higher rating with the similar HP" is utterly irrelevant. Apples and oranges. You know what you can't point to? An SR that is rated to tow that much.

Proof is not what you assume their motivations are and cherry picking a single element and comparing it to a completely different vehicle. All HP isn't equal. Want proof of that? Go talk to Tacoma owners about the 2nd gen and 3rd gen. HP is very similar, but the behavior of the trucks and where it comes in the power band is hugely different. By your "logic" a Challenger with 375 HP should tow just fine.

You are making your argument based on feelings and info seen through a keyhole without taking into account the plethora of other factors that go into payload and tow ratings. A slew of factors that, unless somebody here is an automotive engineer working the math to determine payload, NONE OF US can legitimately claim to know better about than the people that actually built it.

    You prove nothing.

Which oil is best for towing duty? Is there one that will increase one's towing metrics?

So sport mode is just marketing speak for what is actually manual mode? I'm fine with a manual mode but it's too bad they feel the need to be misleading. There are some people that prefer modern comfort and might be pissed at the deception (kind of like the payload deception). I believe even you prefer modern conveniences, remember saying this?

There are a lot of good nostalgic memories here, but as much as I gripe about wanting manual everything it sure is nice being in 2024 sometimes.

I can go from 2WD to 4WD by moving my finger 1/2” (1cm in Canadian) while I drive around on coil springs getting 15mpg on 37” tires.

I can literally listen to any song that has ever been recorded, or talk to someone in Egypt all without even using my hands.

It just kind of amazes me sometimes.

Toyota never calls the "manual" mode sport mode. They call it S-Mode, and it stands for sequential shifting. They are not misleading with it. Their customers don't read the manual and then assume what the S stands for.

I actually want an SR and am trying hard to get over its short comings. What short comings you ask? The vast majority of my driving involves towing a trailer, so I would like to have tow/haul mode, tow mirrors, trailer brake controller, and a locking or at least limited slip rear diff. Just a basic work truck, which is what I thought an SR was, but they neutered it and force going to a higher trim level to get work equipment.
