It’s amazing the things some folks on this forum argue about.

just to give a theoretical comparison of the v6 vs v8 mpg.

2016 tacoma v6 (this included towing a u-haul 6x12 trailer over 500 miles 1-way twice moving daughter to college @ MSP and 1 week later back home, didnt care for college)
    $1372.52 over 50 full tanks = $27.45
    avg 16.16 mpg
    total mileage 18716

2018 tundra v8 ffv (this included towing a u-uhaul 6x12 trailer 1700 miles 1-way only full of furniture from ga to nd)
    $5313.16 over 130 tanks = $40.87
    avg 11.56 mpg
    total mileage 23712

2014 4runner v6 (this included towing u-haul 6x12 trailer 1700 miles 1-way from ga to nd furniture again)

also fuelly lost about 9 months of data so the 4runner data is incomplete)

    $9498.04 over 228 tanks = $41.65
    avg 16.51 mpg
    total mileage 71817

notice the mileage is roughly in the same ballpark 23k vs 18k but the disparity in tank fill ups is alot.

i am tracking this via a-car app (fuelly)

it's almost as bad as what the guys on Tacomaworld.com argue about. Don't dare ask about engine oil brands...

With respect...this has little to do with reliability, and everything to do with the whole new model year/engine thing. Yes, I/we totally understand it's been tried and tested...but not in the Tundra. Given the fact that the Ecoboost did, in fact, have issues in MY11/12 (intercooler issues, timing chain issues, and some malformed cylinders, I believe - this also occurred with the 5.0L), it made sense to wait a few years to ensure all the kinks were worked out.

Granted, if the engines are fine in the LS500, they'll likely be just fine in the Tundra; but still, literally every mechanic I've ever talked to has recommended not buying the first model year; that's all.

Why does your tundra get such horrible mileage?? I just did a 50 mile loop and averaged 19.4

Tacoma is 20/23 so 16.6 towing seems right. Tundra is 13/18, so 19.4 doesn’t seem right.

cause its 99% city driving and our small town is only 4mi wide by 5mi tall, roughly 25 sq miles. also our winters means we remote start for longer due to the temps and the wife's demeanor on how cold she wants to bear driving the tundra.

edit: also she drove the tacoma in the same situation so the mpg is comparable to the tacoma and tundra.

she has to have the truck due to having 2 gsp pheasant hunting dogs. we keep them in the cab and not the bed due to the temps during hunting season. when we had only 1 gsp the tacoma was fine for space. once we got the 2nd gsp there wasnt enough space for 2 dog (sometimes 3 when hunting with friends) in a tacoma. hence the crew cab tundra.

Wait until they find out the new Tundra will use the new 0W16 oil. :annoyed:

    also to add...
    tacoma :
    towing was 11.34 mpg
    best was 21.49 mpg
    last tank was 13.33 mpg
avg was 16.61 mpg (there is a typo in the original post showing 16.16, it should have been 16.61

    tundra
    towing was 6.74 mpg
    best was 17.26 mpg
    last tank was 10.42 mpg
    avg was 11.56 mpg

    4runner
    towing was 10.70 mpg
    best was 24.66 mpg
    last tank was 18.56 mpg
    avg was 16.51 mpg

just to add a caveat, winds are horrible in ND so once you get out past SD or MN the mpg actually goes up. when you have to deal with head/cross winds of 20-35 mph @ 70-75 mpg limit all the time it doesn't matter what vehicle you drive and/or towing in ND.

also i always towed a 6x12 uhaul trailer so the comparison is the same.

in all truthfulness, i really dont care about the mpg, i just track the vehicles for gee whiz stats. there was a time when gas was $4.xx and i dropped my 2004 v8 4runner for a car for mpg (v6 sonata), but i was miserable driving it during the winters. now that i have a well paying job and the wife is doing alot better in her job we dont care about that aspect anymore. we care more about the creature comforts for ourselves and for the hunting dogs when she goes hunting (i dont hunt but i follow her in the tundra). as you get older your priorities change a lot (easier to get into a suv/truck than sliding into a car on the ground).

I totally understand the reservations on a first model year / engine. But again, look at Toyota’s engineering history in providing new designs that are reliable right out the gate while providing upgrades in technology and performance.

Just look at what a huge step the 2nd gen Tundra was vs. 1st gen in nearly every way, including a brand new engine.

when the 3rd gen tacoma came out we put our pre-allocation request into our local dealer a few months before release for a 2016 tacoma v6 sport 4wd in blazing blue pearl (funny part was when it came it people were already trying to buy it out from under us. one them was our neighbor across the street from our house). the only issue we had was the insert for the hood scoop was not snapped in correctly. when i bought my 2014 4runner limited after the refresh i had a specific requirement that it NOT have a 3rd row seat, that took a while to find one. i've never had any issues with 1st year toyota models across my 15 new toyota's i have bought since my first new 84 celica gt fastback.

and that celica gt i we ran into the ground, automatic and me being a kid would rev in "N" and drop it into "D". it had like 150-160K miles on it and when we sold it, the person only wanted the dam engine for some kind of race car.

Oh, I don't disagree with you there, honestly. Toyota does indeed have an excellent track record.

BUT (lol) I'd still rather wait, just to be safe. I've been bitten numerous times by this. I'm not at all one of those who 'has' to have that V8 growl; long as it's reliable and provides sufficient power and all that, I'm good. Plus, in my situation, by the time the 2022's come out, my truck will likely be paid off (I'm making quadruple payments to get it paid off ASAP), so if I want to upgrade @ that time, I can. :)

LOL those ratings are a complete joke. Sometimes you get much less and sometimes more.
I got 19.4 driving from Bakersfield to Tucson in my tundra(towing 6500 pounds worth of my brother's stuff back I got 11.3)
A Tacoma towing a 6x12 won't get 16 if it had a decent load. I towed a 6x12 from CA to Alaska in a v6 Tacoma and averaged 13. I got 24 highway in Alaska(basically no city driving there) but 17 city in CA.
My tundra has been averaging 15 city.

No more regular cabs from Toyota in the U.S., my next truck will be another used one or from another manufacturer.

Hopefully a regular cab with a 38 gallon fuel tank, or a crew cab, front bench seat with a 38 fuel tank, would be what I'm looking for
